Past Memories- June 17th (by Account deleted)

June 17th is a day of the year that has had many different events take place, some fantastic, and some not so good. Let's take a look back at the most memorable events on June 17th.

June 17, 1885: Statue of Liberty Given:
The French gave the Statue of Liberty as a gift to the United States that marked the Centennial of the American Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. It is now in New York. Did you know there are actually three Statues of Liberty? One in New York and two in Paris: Luxembourg Gardens and in Seine, France.   There are now replicas all around the world.

1928 Canada: Amelia Earhart:
This is the year that Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

1948 Plane Crash in USA:
United Airlines was flying a DC-6 plane from San Diego to New York crashed in Pennsylvania when trying to stop on an Emergency landing. 

1953 Riots in Germany:
Riots in East Berlin with fighting between construction workers led to a protest against the Communist government of East Germany which made 50,000 people lose jobs. The Soviet Union sent over unarmed troops to stop the rebellion. 

1972: Start of Watergate:
Five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Office. They were arrested for having burglary tools. It was later found out they were part of President Nixon's reelection team.

June 1999 Europe, Coca Cola:
100 Belgian schoolchildren fell ill after drinking Coca Cola which triggered a blood disorder that destructed the blood cells. They took all their products off shelves of many countries in Europe.

2012 United States Rodney King Dies:
Rodney King died on June 17, 2012. He was beaten up in 1991 being a subject to police brutality. He was found in his pool. The coroner did not suspect foul play. He died at the age of forty-seven. It was suspected to have something to do with drug overdose.
