Fashion is an important part of our day to day lives, someone’s clothes can tell you a lot about the person. In this article, we will take a look at one of the biggest fashion events; The MET gala. I will try to explain the purpose of the gala, discuss my favourite themes of the gala and also show some outfits made by Ruccola, Moss and Cimorene based on the themes.
The MET gala was established in 1948 as a way to raise money for the Costume Institute and also to mark the opening of the new annual exhibitions. The first ever gala was a midnight dinner and the tickets cost around $50 each, however, the first ever modern MET gala was hosted in 1973. The MET gala in 1973 was hosted on March 21st and the theme was “The World of Balenciaga” and the gala was sponsored by the government of Spain. There also was a second MET gala in 1973 which was hosted on December 12th and the theme was “The 10s, the 20s, the 30s: Inventive Clothes: 1909-1939”. Each year there’s a new theme of the gala which is also the theme of the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of art. Almost every year after the gala in December 1973 there has been at least one co-chairperson, famous people such Jacqueline Kennedy, Justin Timberlake, Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga and many more have all been co-chairs during the MET gala.
As a fan of fashion, I have watched plenty of the red carpet looks from the MET galas throughout the year and I have managed to pick up my top 3 favourite themes.
The theme of the gala in 2015 was “China: Through the Looking Glass” where Rihanna showed up in her stunning yellow dress and also Beyoncé’s beautiful dress. I absolutely fell in love with very iconic outfits such as Rihanna’s and that’s why this is one of my favourite themes. The VP user Cimorene made an amazing outfit based on the theme.
The theme of the MET gala and the exhibition of 2018 was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” and we saw iconic outfits such as Rihanna's stunning outfit and Ariana Grande’s outfit inspired by the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Even though I’m atheist myself and don’t really care about religion, I can admire the beautiful art in different religious buildings and therefore the theme is one of my favourite themes. My last favourite theme of the MET is the theme of 2020 “About Time: Fashion and Duration”, I liked the theme so I’m very sad that the gala got cancelled due to the pandemic but the exhibition looked beautiful. I can understand that it might be hard to imagine what the celebrities attending the gala would wear for this theme but based on the exhibition it was all about bringing back old trends in a modern way and I really liked that idea and that’s why this theme made it into my top 3 list. The VP user Moss made a stunning outfit on VP based on the theme.
