The Netflix series “Heartstopper” was released on April 22nd 2022, which means the series has been live for 16 days and have already gained huge popularity. Before you continue to read; there are some spoilers!
The series is mostly focusing on Charles “Charlie” Spring and his life as a year 10 student at Truham Grammar School (an all-boys school), Charlie recently got outed and has since then had a hard time at school and has been bullied a lot. Charlie’s best friends are Tao Xu, Elle Argent and Isaac Henderson. A new semester at the Truham Grammar School has just begun and things are a little different this year; Elle has just transferred to Harvey Greene Grammar School (an all-girls school) after coming out as transgender, and Charlie has a secret relationship with Benjamin “Ben” Hope who is a guy that’s questioning his sexuality but publicly doesn’t want to be seen with Charlie or called “gay”. The relationship is very toxic since Charlie is not even allowed to look at or talk to Ben during the school days and they meet each other after or before school in different empty rooms in school where no one can see them together. This eventually leads to a breakup, but sadly Ben has a hard time moving on and accepting it. Nicholas “Nick” Nelson is a popular year 11 rugby player at Truham Grammar School, who happens to be seated next to Charlie in form class. Charlie quickly gets a crush on Nick but is trying to deny his feeling because Nick is “the straightest guy at school”. Charlie and Nick slowly start to hang out more and more and Charlie even joins the rugby team after Nick has asked him if he would be interested in that and since the rugby team is one person short. However, Ben is not happy with Charlie hanging out with Nick and he wants Charlie back but Charlie rejects him which ends up with Ben forcing himself on Charlie. Thankfully Nick had noticed that something seemed off with Charlie and had followed him and could stop Ben and tell him to leave Charlie alone. After this Charlie and Nick get even closer and spend time with each other outside of school and they both end up falling for each other… But how will Nick handle his confusion and questions about his own sexuality? Is Charlie going to be in another relationship but on someone’s else terms? And how will that affect his mental health? You will have to watch the series on Netflix to find that out!

Heartstopper is a new Netflix series which was released on April 22nd which is an LGBTQ series that’s based on a comic series by Alice Oseman. In this article, we will talk a bit about the comic series, the author, and the Netflix series and introduce you to some of the characters and the cast for the Netflix series.
Alice Oseman is a 27th-year-old author born in Kent, United Kingdom. Oseman uses she and they pronouns and is openly aromantic asexual, which she came out with when promoting her novel “Loveless”. They are known for their books which cover mental health issues, eating disorders, sexualities, ethnicities and genders. They have written the novels “Solitaire”, “Nick and Charlie”, “This Winter”, “Radio Silence”, “I Was Born For This” and “Heartstopper”. Their novels have been highly appreciated by youths for being “relatable” and showing a realistic view of teens' lives. Oseman wrote the script for the Netflix series and can actually be spotted in the series, during the train ride in the last episode.
“Heartstopper” was first released in 2016 on Alice Oseman’s own Tumblr. She also did the illustrations in the comic so it truly was made 100% by Oseman herself. The comic was published as a book in 2018 after she have had a Kickstarter campaign a few months prior. The physical book is published by Hachette Children’s Group, a French publisher.
