Over a billion years ago our Earth was created. There was an abundance of everything you could think of: fruit, animals, people, and especially water. Water is what keeps us humans alive. According to the WWAP, each person needs 20-50 liters of water per day for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. It has been proven that a person can only go three days without having any water in their system.
The biggest problem is our whole world is growing and we have so many demands for water that we can’t meet them. The Nature Journal says that over a billion people cannot get clean water where they live.
The top ten places according to ecorazzi.com that need water are: Afghanistan who only has thirteen percent of clean drinking water in their country. The biggest reason Afghanistan does not have enough water is because there is a lack of safe access to clean water. The second place in our world that has so much scarce water is Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s population has 82 million people. Only 11 percent of people have access to clean water. The lack of water has made the infant mortality rate skyrocket to 77/1,100 live births. Another city that does not have access to clean water is Bangladesh, India. The biggest health problem in Bangladesh is linked to scarce water. According to water.org, ‘Diarrheal causes have led 100,000 children to die each year.’
The two biggest places that need water in our world are India and Africa. They are still considered third world countries. Which means that the country has had a lack of development. These types of countries have diseases like AIDS and they have no urbanization or development. The only way we can help those countries is to help them develop by donating time and effort to digging wells, curing those diseases, and transforming them into countries like where we live. We are lucky to live in the United States.
75 percent of the earth is blue. But, only 2.5 percent is drinkable water. Two thirds of the fresh water is hidden away in glaciers, snow, and icecaps. The water we have is being taken faster than it can be replenished.
The Global Water Crisis shows us they we are in a shortage of water. But, that’s not really the case. We have an abundance of water. It just cannot be used for one reason or another. An example would be the hurricane that just happened: Hurricane Sandy. Professor Dabelko from says, “Too much water can be just as deadly.” This quote explains it perfectly because without water we can die. With excess water that cannot be taken for good purposes can kill us. Hurricane Sandy killed 285 people. Hurricane Sandy did not kill nearly as many people as Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans did. Hurricane Katrina killed 1,833 people. Not to mention all of the homes, lives, and memories that were destroyed. Water can be just as fatal as being helpful. There are still many things that are being done to repair the damage from the hurricanes our nation has recently seen. Our world will never be the same after the things that have happened.
Water.org said, “Without water, life would not exist.” This quote makes me think that in thirty years if there is barely any water left we will all eventually die off. So what can we do about that? If the problems with the water are not managed quickly people will die from lack of water, food supplies will decline, and waterborne diseases will increase in people around the world. Hydropower generates at least eighty percent of electricity in the U.S. We rely on water to use hydropower. Our world is already going through water withdrawals. What will happen in thirty years when we have no more water on earth to sustain life? Will our human race die off? We haven’t treated the Earth the way it should be treated. We do not own the Earth, many humans think it is the other way around. That’s where things have gone wrong.
