Academy Awards 2013 (by Private)

What day is it? Thats right, its Oscar day! Arguably the most prestigious accolade in Hollywood, the Oscars, or Academy Awards annually honors the most talented and excellent actors, actresses, directors, screenwriters, movies, documentaries, and everything in between.
Lets take a look at this year's nominations in main categories:

Best Picture: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty

Best Actor in a Leading Role: Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix, Denzel Washington

Best Actress in a Leading Role: Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhané Wallis, Naomi Watts

Best Director: Amour (Michael Haneke), Beasts of the Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin), Life of Pi (Ang Lee), Silver Linings Playbook (David O. Russell), Lincoln (Steven Spielberg)

The Oscars date back to 1929 - lets take a walk down memory lane!

  • The most nominated films are Titanic and All About Eve with 14 each.
  • The most successful films in Oscar history are Ben-Hur, Titanic and Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. Each took home 11 gongs – although Return Of The King was the only one of those to take home every award for which it was nominated.
  • Famously, Meryl Streep has accrued the most Best Actress nominations with 14 to date, but Katherine Hepburn holds the record for the most wins with four. On Golden Pond, The Lion In Winter, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner and Morning Glory were her award-winning films.
  • The youngest Oscar winner was Tatum O'Neal, only ten when she won Best Supporting Actress for Paper Moon in 1973.
  • The only sequel to have won Best Picture is The Godfather: Part II.

So will you have your eyes glued onto the screen come tonight? Who do you think will win? Who do you want to win? Let VP know below!
