Beauty Hack: Hydrogen Peroxide (by Sareureuk )

I've always been a sucker for beauty hacks and I owe this to my wonderful homeroom teacher and my mom for always showing me there's alternatives. Cheaper, natural, less damaging and harmful alternatives. And speaking of my homeroom teacher, she was also my chemistry teacher and has taught me that chemistry isn't just fun and nice, but that it's also our friend. So, this being said, I decided to let you guys in on a multiple purpose chemical substance, hydrogen peroxide.
Now now, don't start worrying. I know that the natural reaction when hearing the two words 'chemical substances' is to think that they're harmful or dangerous, but that's not so. Actually chemical substances are any type of matter which has chemical composition and characteristic properties and which cannot be divided into separate components just by using physical separation methods. Water and salt are chemical substances. See? Not all are harmful or dangerous. Now that we got this out of the way and aren't worrying anymore, let's get back to talking business.
Hydrogen Peroxide. Some of you might have heard of it. Maybe you even know what it's used for. But for those who don't know much about it let me give you a brief intro. Hydrogen peroxide is made out of two chemical elements. Hydrogen and oxygen. Just like our daily water. But instead of it having the H2O formula, it has H2O2. It is a clear liquid, without any particular smell. Just like normal water. Please don't drink it though. Hydrogen peroxide is mostly diluted to a 3% form or 6% form for household use [as it can cause serious burns in pure form]. But enough of this. You all clicked for beauty hacks so let's start!!!

Teeth whitener. I have used hydrogen peroxide as a mouth wash for whitening my teeth and let me tell you guys, you'll see the difference from the first time you use it!!! I'm not even kidding. Not only does it whiten your teeth, but it also kills most of the bacteria in your mouth. Double win!!!! I suggest you dilute the hydrogen peroxide if it's the first time using it. 50-50% with normal water. Hold it in your mouth for 3-5 minutes. You'll notice that it will sting a little, but that's due to bacteria. You can do this twice a day. Please don't swallow it!!!! If you're comfortable enough not to dilute it, even better [make sure it's the 3% hydrogen peroxide as 6% can burn a little more]. You can also make a paste with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and use it. It will have the same effect of killing bacteria and whitening your teeth [psst it can also cure oral yeast infections too]
Hair bleach. Instead of bleaching your hair with whatever bleach on the markets, you can use hydrogen peroxide. Dilute it with water in a 50-50% solution and spray it on wet hair. If you want to do highlights, dab a cotton ball and just simply stroke it along your hair strands. It won't do a quick job though. Don't expect to do it once and boom bleached blonde hair. It will take time. But in the end, you won't have dry, brittle hair. I suggest you do this once a week because hydrogen peroxide won't strip your hair just of its color, but of its essential oils too. So if you don't want to mess up your hair, I suggest waiting a week between every two bleaching processes. Also because it takes longer to bleach, the results between two bleaching sessions won't be drastic, but gradual and more natural looking.
Contact lenses. Hydrogen peroxide is used as a disinfectant in cleaning solution for contact lenses due to its ability to break down the proteins on the contact lenses which build up from the eyes' immune response. This makes wearing contact lenses more comfortable for those with sensitive eyes.
Skin lightener. There's a bunch of products out there for people who want lighter skin. Now, you may think 'why would anyone want lighter skin?'. For the same reason why people like to tan. It's either a beauty standard or a personal preference. For the first time try diluting the hydrogen peroxide with normal water. Get a cotton ball and just dab it in the mixture and then apply it on the skin you want to lighten. Was after 30 minutes. It sometimes starts to sting or itch a lot, if you can't stand it just wash it off your body and dilute it more. For those with sensitive skin I recommend using the 3% form and diluted in more water. Those of you who don't have that sensitive skin can use the 3% form not diluted. But if you have a 6% form of hydrogen peroxide, please dilute it at first.
Whitening nails. Now if you're a fan of nail polish and you don't let your nails breather every now and then, you might notice a yellow-ish color on your nails after a while. Here's where hydrogen peroxide comes in handy. Just take a cotton ball, dab it in hydrogen peroxide and wipe your nails with it every two-three days. It's a slow process and it will take around 3-4 weeks depending on how yellow-ish your nails are, but it will turn them back into their natural color and get rid of that icky yellow-ish color. Just remember not to use any nail polish on them during this period. Now these are just SOME of the benefits and uses of hydrogen peroxide. Do tell me which you found the most interesting, which of these you already knew of and if you're going to use any of these in the near future.

Thank you a whole lot Jo [Hashiyan] for this lovely layout ♥ !!!!

Fun fact: 90% hydrogen peroxide is used as an oxygen source in rocket fuels!!!

The hydrogen peroxide rinse and brushing with baking soda really should be limited to 2-3 times a week as is causes damage to the tissues (hydrogen peroxide (no more than 3% should be used) and wears away your enamel (abrasive properties of baking soda). The best way to reduce the bacteria in your mouth is to use mouthwash with no alcohol (alcohol is bad for tissues) and a tongue brush.

Actually baking soda is a basic and it neutralizes the effects of hydrogen peroxide. As for the hydrogen peroxide use instead of mouthwash, that's why I stated it should be diluted with water
