"Long ago, two races ruled over Earth: Monsters and Humans. One day, war broke out between the two races. After a long battles, the humans were victorious. They sealed the monsters underground with a magic spell."

Undertale is a special game. It's an 8-bit pixel, rpg adventure game where you take the role of a regular human dubbed Frisk. After climbing Mt. Ebott, tripping like the little clumsy bum you are and stumble into a large crater in the ground, you discover the entrance to the Ruins. 

The Ruins were the first home to the monsters who were banished to the underground. Due to events and time, the monsters ventured further into the underground, finding new homes an towns. Establishing businesses and communities. But back in the Ruins, where you fell in a patch of flowers, you get up and head down the white path and through the arched doorway where you find Flowey. Seemingly the tutorial for the game, he shows you how the battle system works in a very deceiving way.

"See that heart? That is your soul, the very culmination of your being! Your soul starts off weak, but can grow strong if you gain a lot of LV. What's LV stand for? Why, love, of course! You want some love don't you? Don't worry, I'll share some with you! Down here, love, is shared through... little white... friendliness pellets. "

Flowey then prompts you to collect the little white pellets that he sends into the battle box and by collecting just one, your 20 hp is thrown down to 1 and the cute face of Flowey becomes something of nightmares. Almost in an instant the cute tutorial you were expecting has become a harsh reality check where Flowey then tells you, 

"You idiot! in this world, it's kill or be killed! Why would anyone pass up an opportunity like this?! Die!"

Your little heart is surrounded by those little white pellets and Flowey laughs manically since you have no chance of escape. With the circle growing smaller and smaller each second, it only seems right to feel doomed until your savior comes, kicking Flowey out of the way, saving you and refilling your hp back up to it's humble 20 points, you now bask in the sweet presence of Toriel or Goat Mom if you happened to ask Jacksepticeye. 

From this point, your real tutorial and your adventure begins and depending on how you chose to go about the encounters you come across, your game can become drastically different. So be careful, you might find yourself question just how strong your soul really is.

In this game, you have three ways to play. 

Neutral.
True Pacifist.
Or, Genocide. 

Depending on how you play, each way will determine the ending and some of the game play you'll encounter. 

In a neutral game, which would probably be the most common, would require you to gain at least one exp. Just one point can cause your entire game to change. You gain exp by killing monsters that attack you. 

In a true pacifist run, you don't gain a single experience point. You look to spare every monster that crosses your path because there is no use in war or murder. This run seems to be most popular with players because it leaves your with a feel good... feeling. 

Lastly, a genocide run requires you to kill every single monster that you encounter, including Toriel, your helpful guide in the beginning of the game. Good luck not feeling like a total scum bag after that.

> Toby Fox made the protagonist gender neutral. The fan community has dubbed the character the name Frisk. 

> Characters names like Sans and Papyrus are plays on the fonts Comic Sans and Papyrus. As well as Toriel whose name is a play on Tutorial.

> If you pet Lesser Dogs head repeatedly, it will grow until it leaves the screen then come back down until it leaves the screen and keep repeating. 

> During the credits of the game, you're able to take control of Frisk's soul a last time and dodge the names of  the backers from Kickstarter. If you dodge all the names the mysterious door in Snowdin will unlock. 

> MTT stands for Mettaton

> Saving items like the Butterscotch Cinnamon pie that Toriel gives you, can lesson the attack of some monsters and cause additional trivia to be found. 

> All of Alphys' books on humans are mangas. 

> You can go on a date with Papyrus.

> When fighting Asgor, and he defeats you, you can choose to tell Asgor that he's killed you once which he apologizes. This can be repeated for twice, three times and then maxing out at many times all of which he offers remorse because he's just a big softy.
