| CARTOONS: Good Ol' Days - Part 1 (Quinzelle) |
I was inspired by a recent (not-so-recent by the time I upload this..) forum thread, largely between me and HAMARTIA, in which we spoke about one of the most legendary animated fights ever. I got to thinking about my favourite cartoons from when I was younger. I still love watching cartoons - I'm a big sucker for nostalgia. I also enjoy many recent ones. ❤ NOTE: This shall not contain any shows such as Sailor Moon or Pokemon. These are animes that were often confused for cartoons and thus are a separate art form. This shall focus on Western Animation. Also please bare in mind that, by "Good Ol' Days" this is coming from the point of view of someone who's childhood spanned from 1999 to around 2012 and who grew up in the United Kingdom. These are my opinions on the best cartoons of that time, though I have multiple other favourites that shall not be listed. ![]() All Round Amazing W.I.T.C.H WITCH is a French-American cartoon that was developed from the Italian comic series of the same name. The show follows the story of 5 girls; Will Vandom, Irma Lair, Taranee Cook, Cornelia Hale and Hay-Lin, as they try to defeat the evil ruler of Meridian: Prince Phobos. The girls make up W.I.T.C.H (an acronym of the initals of their names), a group of Guardians each with elemental powers who protect "the Veil" - a magical energy used to separate Meridian from the other worlds after it becomes ruled by evil. The team is led by Will, the Keeper of the Heart of Kandrakar - who for the first season does not posses an elemental Auramere. However, the other Guardians do (yet develop extra powers as Will develops her elemental). Irma is the Guardian of Water, Taranee the Guardian of Fire, Cornelia the Earth Guardian and Hay-Lin the Guardian of Air. This is one of my all-time favourite cartoons. The only thing I dislike is that it was cancelled too soon as thus the second season is left fairly open-ended. However, there are a number of reasons for why I love this series. The first being, it's cinematography is amazing. The animation of the elements is amazing, as well as, the use of colour palettes and scenery used to separate each world. It has dark under tones which are incredibly unusual for a children's cartoon show. One of the biggest things I love is that, yes it is a children's show, but it's very mature. It doesn't treat children like they are stupid. This is a show that I watched when I was around 8 years old and I have rewatched multiple times since, finding new things to love about it. Another big thing that I love is the screenwriting. The character's go through a lot of subtle development and each have their own distinct personalities, with their own quirky humourous lines. It is a show that I could talk about all day and one that I think is largely underrated. Avatar: The Last Airbender The Last Airbender is series one of the American cartoon Avatar. The show follows Aang, the master of all four elements: Air, Water, Fire and Earth. Aang is the last Airbender from 100 years ago, who fled his Nation upon finding out at a young age that he is the new Avatar. He is discovered by Water Tribe siblings, Katara and Sokka, who free him from his iceberg which kept him alive for a century. Waking up, he learns that the Fire Nation have started a war upon the nations and that it is his job to stop the Fire Lord from completing his takeover. But first, he must learn to master all four elements with the help of his friends. Again, this is another of my all-time favourites. It has an incredible art style which beautifully blends together styles of both Western and Eastern animation. Something else I love about this show is the amount of thought that went into developing the world of Avatar. It has an incredibly in-depth culture and history to it, for example, each form of bending is taken from a real life fighting style that reflects the elements - such as Waterbending is Tai Chi, due to it's very fluid movements. Something you shall learn about me through reading this, is that I love character development and screenwriting very much. As a screenwriter myself, it's something that I hold very dear and I'm always excited to see in what ever I watch. Avatar handles character development in an incredible way. Each character goes through a development and there is at least one that everyone can relate to. Similarly to W.I.T.C.H, there is so much that I could say about this show. However if you would like to learn more about TLA - I suggest reading HAMARTIA's blog post found here. ![]() I hope that you enjoyed Part 1 of my series. Future parts include: Storywriting (cartoons that I love simply for their characters/humour etc.), Old School (such as Batman: The Animated Series) and Recent Cartoons (such as Young Justice and Bob's Burgers). I hope you enjoyed this article and check out the cartoons I mentioned. Comment below, did you watch any of these cartoons? Do you plan to? What were your favourites growing up? Thank you so much for reading. Remember to subscribe to stay up to date on this series as well as future posts that I may create <3 ![]() |
