BA: Gorillaz |
Hello! Ainsley here with another Blogger Article. This week, it’s going to be about the band Gorillaz, to celebrate the soon-to-be released album titled Humanz, coming out on April 28, 2017 after five long years. I first discovered Gorillaz in a thread right here on our beloved website Virtual Popstar a few weeks ago, around when "Saturnz Barz" came out. I didn’t think any of it until later that night when I saw the video on the trending list on YouTube. Curious, I clicked the thumbnail. After an irrelevant ad about makeup I would never wear, I was instantly greeted by a casual beat. I nodded along as the video panned over a backyard then to a slightly dilapidated house. After some dialogue from those who I then believed to be the main characters of the music video, the song finally began. Three minutes and nineteen seconds later, I was a changed person. Unable to fully understand what just happened, I replayed the song and basically had what is known to some as an “eargasm,” which, according to Urban Dictionary, is the official term to describe “the chill down [one’s] spine [he or she] gets when listening to amazing music.” And trust me, that was some goooood music. So then I asked myself, “What the %$@! even is Gorillaz?!” Thanks to a quick Google Search, I discovered a lot about them. Gorillaz is a British virtual band brought together by Damon Albarn, a musician, and artist Jamie Hewlett in 1998. The band is consisted of completely fictional characters, all animated with a distinctive personality and elaborate backgrounds. 2-D does lead vocals and keyboards, Murdoc Niccals is on bass guitar and backing vocals while Noodle plays the guitar and Russel Hobbs provides the drums and percussion. Although they do not have a set genre of music, many critics have described their style as “alternative rock, Britpop, trip hop, hip hop, electronica, indie, dub, reggae and pop.” All in all, Gorillaz has won around 7 awards, which includes a Grammy Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, an NME Award, three MTV Europe Music Awards, according to Wikipedia. Their albums are such as follows: the self-titled Gorillaz in 2001, Demon Days (2005), Plastic Beach in 2010, The Fall (2011), and finally Humanz in 2017. The style of artwork also changes over time. The images linked below for each character is the current style (2017). Now, let’s get to know the band members a little better. Since they all have such extensive backgrounds, I will describe the attributes that stood out the most to me, and link each of their bios at the beginning of each one (click the bold and underlined name). The images of each member is located above his or her description. 2D, who’s full name is Stuart Pot, has blue hair and black eyes, something that made me really confused. Before doing my research, I thought all the characters were wacky because it was fictional and anything was possible. However, after a little digging around, I found out that they were reasons that sort of made sense. 2D’s hair is blue after he fell off a tree and all his brown hair fell out. When it grew back, it was an azure blue. Bad luck, sure, but at least it was possible in real life. LOL. His eyes are due to two accidents that led to an 8-ball fracture (also known as hyphema) in each pupil. Although 2D is of low intelligence, he is generally known as kind and adoring. Murdoc Niccals has amazing green skin (shown in previous videos and images), which, explained by Jamie Hewlett in a video, is due to the fact that he was an “immortalist” and he has been around since “the dawn of time,” so his body is a “rotting carcass.” He was the one who started the band, and invited 2D to join after being impressed by his appearance. Noodle, a young girl of Japanese descent, began as a subject of a Japanese super soldier project under the scientist Mr. Kyuzo, where they were trained to fight in the Japanese military and government. When Noodle, along with the 22 other children, were deemed “too dangerous and unstable for combat,” Mr. Kyuzo was ordered to dispose of all evidence of the failed experiment, which then included the kids. Noodle was the only one the scientist could not kill, and instead placed her in a state of amnesia known as Ocean Bacon (which led to a loss of memory and the inability to speak English). She later visited Japan and upon hearing the phrase “Ocean Bacon,” regained all her memories and the ability to speak fluent English, along with all other known languages. She wrote the album Demon Days all by herself, including the music and lyrics. Russel Hobbs is known for his good manners and articulate speech. He is said to rely on spirits to guide his beats, who also occasionally come out of his body to help with the rapping. After attempting to commit suicide by eating radioactivity-contaminate fish, he increase his body mass and turned into a giant. However, after being captured by a North Korean regime’s leader who believed him to be Pulgasari, the legendary North Korean Godzilla, fed him meager rations, thus causing Russel to shrink back into the size of his previous size. After reading this and getting to know the band members a little better, are you interested in listening to their songs? And if you already listen to them, what song(s) is/are your favorite(s)? Which member(s)? Let me know in the comments below! 'Til next time, Ainsley x |
