GOING VEGETARIAN |
A while back I went vegetarian and In the process I searched alot on the web what the first weeks would be like. That's when I figured out I would make a blog where I go through every week for 4 weeks. I want to do it so I can later see back on it but also hopefully inspire or help others who may wanna become a vegetarian and don't know what it will be like. My reason is NOT to push this on anyone else, I simply do it for the people who may even consider it or are curious what being a vegetarian is like. I will also post another blog where I tell more facts about being a vegetarian and what it does for our earth, animals and our selves to cut down or completely cut out meat. That blog post I am already working on, so watch out. WEEK 1 I started out very excited for the new life of eating but I was also worried that I would miss meat to much and that I would go bored with what the "limited" food choices. I was wrong, there are alot of options that I didn't see them in the store, probably because I never really looked for alternatives. I had heard of falafel but never tasted it before, luckily the store had them in the freezer section. I had also heard of couscous and wanted to try it out. My first meal was Pita bread with avocado, couscous, falafel and salad. I was very surprised over the flavor my dinner had. I have a friend who is vegetarian and she recommended the celery burger with ingredients like black beans, chickpeas, sweet potato and more. I had it like a normal hamburger and was yet again surprised. A couple of days in I felt great. My body felt light and energized but man, and this is maybe TMI: The bowel movement was just sooo crazy, and that is probably because of all the fiber I was suddenly eating. My body was like "Girl what is this, what are you doing to us, you give me so much food we almost never have" I´ve read and learned that it is a very normal reaction to have more gas and other things coming out from you body when you cut out meat and start eating more plant based WEEK 2 I went into this week energized, ready and motivated to continue my vegetarian journey. At this point I felt even more inspired to discover new dishes and I did. I remember saying to my friend that I feel lighter and nicer, not necessarily that I felt like I looked better but that if my body was a house, it is a nice house to be in. This week I tried something called "poke bowl" I´ll put in two pictures here: It is basically a bowl with alot of vegetables, some grains and healthy fat. I absolutely loved it, and had it two days in a row. Great week, my body felt nice, I felt full when I ate. TMI again, the gas was still there, farting like a dog. Something that will also happen when you go vegetarian is that the bacteria in you stomach changes and start to adapt without meat. With that the body reacts with both gas but also you start to poop more. There were times I had to run to the bathroom because it came so acute. Fiber, which you will get alot of when vegetarian makes you digestion better, and that means you will have more visits to the bathroom. But still a great week WEEK 3 This week was a bit harder. I felt very bloated which also happens when the body adapts from eating meat to more plant based foods. I felt so fat and disgusted but I tried to remember that my gut is colonizing the new bacteria it needs to aid in digestion and that over time, my body would adjust to the increase of fiber I have in my diet, which would also make me have less gas and be less bloated. At this point i felt very demotivated because I didn't wanted to feel that way and I was scared it would not end. In the end of the week the bloating went down and my motivation came back. At this time I also felt out of option food wise. I had tried falafel, sellery burger, poke bowl, pitas and wok. I remembered the time I had my friend from another city staying over for a couple of days and I asked here "I don't know what to buy in, because you don't eat meat" And she answers "Well, I eat the same as you, just without the meat". I realized I didn't need to be a fancy vegetarian I could make something as easy as pasta bolognese but without the meat and with carrots, celery and other vegetables. I yet again felt inspired and that I had alot of options, I felt like I had even more options than when I ate meat, wiredly enough. WEEK 4 This week I felt like things were stabilizing more and more. Also I tired out some more meals. I love lasagna and wanted to recreate it without the meat, so I did and it was delicious even with all the vegtebles. There is really not so much to say from this week other than that this lifestyle feels normal to me. I no longer need motivation to not eat meat because it just became normal to me to not have it. MONTHS LATER: I really wanted to write a little about how it is now months later. Sometimes I miss meat and the other day I buyed something we eat in Norway called "Lapskaus". I buyed it without knowing that there would be meat in it and I thought to myself "Oh well, I´ll eat it just this once and I actually kinda wanted the meat so I let myself have it. It was not good at all, it tasted weird, felt weird chewing and just ugh. Never doing that again! I´ve learned that your tastebuds changes over time when stopping eating meat and I guess it did for me. I also felt so guilty and it was like eating someone entrails, so its just not worth it. I also kinda did run out of inspiration with food mostly because I found good recipes at the start and I also have recreated alot of the meals with meat that I love to a veggie version. It didn't take to long to get inspiration again after asking for tips and looking on Pinterest - there is always something to make. All in all I am happy I went vegetarian, it has done me good and I fell better about myself and can't wait for the rest to come |
