 With the rising cold chilling our bones one can fully well guess what month has arrived upon us. That's right, it's October! And with rusty leaves gathering beneath our feet we'll soon be carving pumpkins insides out! This beautiful month of 31 days is the tenth month of the Gregorian calendar. Its name originates from the Latin's octo-, meaning eight, due to the simple fact that it was the eighth month in the old Roman calendar (In case the "calendar talk" confuses you; the Gregorian calendar, which is the calendar widely used today, is a reform of the Julian calendar, and the Julian calendar was a reform of the Roman calendar). The Roman calendar only had ten months since January and February had not yet been included, making October month number eight!  October is of course not all about fallen leaves and chilly winds. One event that takes place in October (actually beginning in late September and lasting till the beginning of October) is the so called Oktoberfest. Now this isn't exactly an event for the younglings, but it is for any beer-loving person out there! Oktoberfest can be celebrated anywhere, but the main festival is held in Munich, Germany. It has been held there ever since 1810 and is a very important part of the Bavarian culture (a reason to why you might often spot people in the traditional lederhosen and dirndl!). Oktoberfest is said to be the world's largest folk festival and celebrates the beginning of a new beer-brewing season because of the colder temperature and the clearance of old beer to make place for the new. Of course the festival is not all about drinking beer - there's a lot of dancing and sausage-eating too!  Oktoberfest in Munich. Halloween on the other hand must be the most well-known about October. Halloween in most countries dawns upon us the very last day of October - the 31th. The name is actually of Christian origin and means "hallowed evening", or "holy evening", after the Scottish term All Hallows' Eve. Halloween possibly stems from a pagan holiday, that can be traced back to about 2000 years ago, where you took farewell to summer and celebrated Samhain, which took place the 31th October. It marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the "darker half" of the year, winter, which was believed was the time where the Aos Sí (the "spirits", or "fairies" ) easier could get into our world from the Otherworld. The Christians, in order to convert pagans, later on followed this day with All Saints' Day to honour saints. The word Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, itself didn't show up until the mid 16th century where it suddenly gained a connotation with the Christian saint honouring, marking that it was the day before All Saints' Day (or All Hallows' Day). Halloween became a popular holiday in North America in the 19th century with the Scottish and Irish immigration, and with its many different influences - both European and American - it developed into the holiday we know and cherish today.
