i've been thinking
Solar

about getting into narrative design and or game writing
i feel like i could be really good at it but the job market is super oversaturated but still imagine my job was to sit in  a room with people building lore and quests together & feeling so inspired together wow it would literally be my dream

anyone else who's into tht at all?

Omg that does sound like fun as someone who loves to write and tell stories

I think you should do it, or seriously consider it (:

What do you have to lose by going for it

i made a game in my first year of uni. it was fun af (when i wasn't dealing with 74579 errors from parts of the code interacting with other parts of the code ) but i focused more heavily on the programming side than creativity obvs as a programmer

i think you should go for it though!!! could start as a hobby and go from there?

i watched a video yesterday on how to kind of get started!! was nice, vid was made by a girl, i love informative yt videos made by women

guerrilla games (from horizon zero dawn) is dutch it would be so cool if i could work on a game like horizon one day i used 2 be sooo obsessed w the world

also talked abt it with my mom she thinks it could be a good idea to switch to a job with a little less 'serious' responsibility (bc my job (before i went on sick leave) is mental healthcare worker which i do on my own 90% of the time, i do have a team but i give individual coaching to my clients and always go there on my own so if something is up im the one who has to fix it basically)

also being a game developer will give me more freedom to be myself when working i think
as a mental healthcare worker i have to be semi professional, i can wear baggy jeans and dye my hair but idk it still feels a little limited
as game developer i feel like i could pull up in a tank top (or be more genderfluid???) and there being no problem

I’ve been interested in gamedev since I was 11 n I’ve made some shitty dress up games teehee the narrative part I think I tend to end up more on the just fiction writing in general side or making comics as what I want to do but I have no desire for it do be anything other than a hobby

my brother is in gamedev and miraculously got a job straight out of uni but it’s making mobilegame slop and also he’s on the programming side of thingsbut he still has to go to an office and stuff

I think even if not gamedev ur mom might be rightist having something less serious might be good for brain bc its seems like such a struggle to have to like work with people who are essentially going thru the same stuff you are yourself

i would recommend you to write some stories and maybe release some of them on the internet to get some sort of portfolio if you're serious about it. Even better: make your own game. It's not as hard as it sounds but its time consuming but you can start with simple things like visual novels etc. I wish i could tell everyone to just go for it but I study animation & game development and unfortunately you're right, the market is heavily oversaturated and you might not be able to make it if thats the only thing you want to do. It's rarely the only job they do and they usually help with development and stuff especially if its indie because they don't have the money to spend on writers and its mostly the whole team building the idea together with one vision keeper who manages the idea. If you want a position, i would try my hands in an indie company (maybe try your skills in other areas as well like narrative design in environment art, 3D modeling etc) . Another issue in the game industry is that they don't offer a lot of these positions anymore and its something you might get to do after a while of working within a company and built a good portfolio or showed off your skills. This is not to tell you that you shouldn't try because you can only make it by trying but its unfortunately the reality and i'm currently in the middle of it

yes!!! i'm def gonna build up a portfolio & stuff if i'm serious abt it
thank u thank u for the advice its very much appreciated!!! im expecting it to take a lot of time/never work out so it can only turn out better than expected i think  i wouldn't mind having another job with it too! but yea it would for sure just be a hobby thing until my portfolio (and knowledge bc rn i have 0 lol) is impressive enough to do something with it
i was also thinking about trying out other areas of game development! but i'm not sure if it's something that i can do because i have dyscalculia so anything numbers/maths related is tough for me, so i'll just have to see if it's something i'd like or not :3
