guys this has literally been a problem for years and i keep coming back to this but HOW do you guys READ?

i cannot for the life of me focus on an academic text and it stresses me the fuck out bc i can ltl not get anything done unless im freaking the fuck out and need to pull an all nighter or else i wont finish my essays

the other days i sat down to write smth and i would ltl write a sentence and be on my phone for 20 min and then write a sentence and another 20 min on insta and it drives me fucking insane

pls

ok i used to have a really bad time reading/studying when I was in school
these are some things that helped:

- set a timer online so my brain could comprehend that "NOW ITS SCHOOL TIME"
- put my phone away from me so I wouldn't just grab it (kitchen, living room, wherever I wouldn't be at)
- chill background music/sounds at a low volume (either rain, a fireplace, someone driving at night, a coffee place ambiance, whatever)
-highlight things as I'm reading
- write short summaries on the topics I was reading (the highlights helped a lot with this)

all of these helped my brain stay engaged with what I was doing
also you could try the pomodoro method!! the short bursts of working + breaks are way less tiring than cramming for 4 hours

I have the same issue as you and am still figuring some things out since the most known methods aren’t that effective with me.

- Fidget with whatever makes you comfortable, can be a stress-ball, slime, or even just a bunch of marbles. Me personally, I need something that I can both fidget with and use as a way to get a quick sensory break, so I mostly use my magnetic small marbles. I fidget with it when I work, and I play with it and build shapes when I need a quick break before breaking down completely.
- Listen to something. I would not recommend podcasts and songs with lyrics if you need to focus on reading, but rather ambiant or brown noises. Personally the brown noises help me calm my thoughts down, but only for a short period of time, it ends up freaking me out so I opt for for ambiant instead.
- It might not work for everyone, but there’s this new type of font that bold only the first few letters of each words. Personally it helps me read and understand faster, so I think it’s worth it to give it a try ! I haven’t found one yet but there will surely be an automatic text converter somewhere online.
- Give yourself a treat for when you finish your task. Any kind, it can be a snack, a walk outside, gaming time, whatever makes you feel like you accomplished something.
- As said already, try to keep any distracting device away from you, even in another room. It may be hard at first, especially since you said that your attention keeps getting everywhere but your text. That’s why the fidgeting and ambiant are important. The fidgeting may help you replace that need of quick distraction tour phone gives you, and the ambiant helps your brain not loses its mind over the task of focusing on only one thing.

A game/software for your computer I highly recommend is Chill Corner, it’s free on Steam. It’s a sort of game where you are in a cozy lo-fi room and its purpose is to help you focus and do your tasks. You have timers, to-do lists, chill music, you have different ambiant noises you can set yourself (rain, fireplace, cafe, etc…). And the longer you spend doing tasks with a timer, the more currencies you earn which allows you to decorate the cozy room as you wish !

If you prefer a mobile app motivator instead, I would then recommend you Habitica. It’s a complete planner but turned into an RPG. Completing your tasks gives you mana and stamina, falling into bad habits deal you damage, and you can go on quest. Aka, start a bigger and longer project out of your comfort zone to slay a boss and earn more loot. There’s also a community part of it where you can create guild to go on a quest, to motivate each others. Or some players can also publish challenges, they are sort of solo quests but in a giveaway format to try to earn the rarest currency on the app. I haven’t won any yet, but it made me reorganize and clean my desk so it’s not that bad !

thanks guys i rly appreciate it but most of these things dont actually work very well for me

highlighting and making notes is my best hope so far in combination w background music

background music helps sometimes, i listen to like breakcore or house or some kinda noise

i already fidget 24/7 but its more to keep myself from biting my nails off and tends to distract me more but nothin to do abt that bc i cannot keep my hands still

i dont like not having my phone with me but i guess i can try, and unfortunately i dont have storage so habitica isnt an option sad sounds cool tho

putting my phone at a physical distance, in a different room preferably

pomodoro timer (50-15 works best for me, but it depends)

skimming the text first and noting the keywords, then reading it for real
if it's a long text and i'm feeling brain dead and am not sure if it's even worth reading (happens when i'm doing research for uni) i'll put the text into gpt and ask for a summary/keywords just to check whether it's of any use

having sth to do with my hands so i don't turn to biting my nails is also a requirement

also studying with someone. i feel bad if i'm procrastinating while sb in my proximity is working so that way i'm forced to be productive

I go for a walk before, make sure I ate enough but not too much, sit down in a room with little distraction where it is completely silent and put my phone far away.

I dont fink i have any specific tricks or anything honestly i think what helps me the most is to not read anything extremely hard or heavy on bad sad stressy down days, cause I'm just not gna be able to take what I need from the text etc, am just gna be like ugh this is hard everything is hard i h8 my life i dont unddrstand lol so i try 2 hype myself up for heavy hw its pretty weird but it works, n on sad days I just read easy curriculum,,, also the whole getting uni work done before its like late afternoon is so motivating cause then I can allow myself 2 just play runescape in the evening lol n I know damn well that if I runey too early I end up playin runescape all day ...........

also I use my friends a lot like I always rambl n write them like holy heck what is this someone help n usually they dont end up helping at all XD but the reassurance that every1 finds it hard is comforting
