"So, do you have date?" Kate was standing in front of the mirror in their family shared bathroom, as her mother asked the question. She shrugged. "Yeah."

Her mom stood in the doorway to the bathroom. "You look really pretty."

Kate smiled at herself in the mirror. She had applied a bit of makeup and was wearing a dark green lace dress. "Thanks mom."

Her date was Jacob Muller, one of her best friends. They had all agreed to go with each other, and now that they were an even number, it fit perfectly. Two girls, two guys.

She would never speak of this, however. It was horrible of her to think about it, she knew that, but she couldn't help it. Although they had all been best friends, friend groups are never perfect. And she had always felt like the odd one out, when they were fully numbered. That didn't mean she didn't miss Anna though. It just meant...

It doesn't matter what it meant.

Alex had been picking at his food during dinner, and quickly skipped out of the dining room as soon as they finished. Everyone were looking forward to this night, and he would be lying if he said he wasn't. But he had a gut feeling about everything. Like something was off, now that they were only four. Maybe it was just his conscience picking at the back of his mind, because he didn't miss Anna. It had been eight months now, but even before she went missing, he hadn't been on the best of terms with her.

Alex had been dating Anna on and off since they were freshmen, but a year ago they ended it for good. He couldn't exactly remember the breakup anymore, but it had all ended in a huge fight. After that, she started dating Jacob, and Alex started distancing himself from the group. He hoped no one would notice, though.

"I'm leaving now," he said as he stood in the doorway. "Have fun," his parents shouted from the living room, before he closed the door behind him.

He was on his way to pick up Ivy.

(i hope you dont mind the detail i added about jacob in relation to alex and anna's relationship )

Of course not that’s fine :)

Ivy had spent most of her evening being an anxious mess. After the disappearance of her best friend, Anna, everything had fallen apart. From her school grades to her mental health she was just a mess. On the outside she tried to portray her usual happy self but inside she was so broken. Her anxiety had hit an all time high, she was depressed which was something she’d never experienced before and even though she was still surrounded by people who loved her she’d never felt so lonely.

Tonight was meant to be one of the best nights of her life. Prom. A night she’d dreamed of for years. Her and Anna had always planned their senior year prom together. What dresses they’d have and how they’d have the perfect dates. And now, she didn’t have Anna here to live the dream with her. In fact, it didn’t really seem like a dream anymore.

Taking one last deep breath of settling courage, she stared in the mirror at herself. Smile, she told herself, and forced a perfectly happy one upon her face. “Enjoy it for Anna, she’d want you to enjoy it.” She told herself, fighting back the tears that seemed to threaten her everyday. She gave her eyes one last little wipe to ensure no make up had smudged before fixing her lipstick. She’s opted for a gorgeous red dress that her and Anna had picked out just a few days before she’d gone missing. It complemented her perfectly. Her make up was simple and her hair cascaded down her bare back in loose curls.

“You look gorgeous Ivy. So so beautiful. I can’t believe my little girls going to her senior prom already.” She heard her mums voice sound from the bedroom door and she glanced over at her with a small smile. “Thanks mum, I should head downstairs I’m sure Alex will be here soon.” She grabbed her clutch bag from the side and made her way downstairs, just in time to hear a car pulling up outside. She’d warned Alex already that he’d have to come in and have pictures with her because her parents were so desperate for them.

Jacob took another swig from the cheap bottle of vodka he’d managed to buy with his fake ID earlier today. He knew he needed to kick the habit but it was hard. Drinking made him feel good and he wanted to have that instead of the horrible feeling of facing reality. It was becoming a bit of a habit now and so was the smoking. Anna used to hate it when he smoked but since she left he found he craved them more than ever. He wasn’t sure what to think. Was she still out there alive? Did someone take her or did she leave on her own terms? Was she hurt or dead? God he had no idea and his mind ran wild with thoughts whenever he didn’t have something there to stop it - and that’s when the drink became a regular thing.

He he slid his suit jacket on, giving his hair one last little hairspray before turning away from the mirror. He slipped his flask of alcohol into the pocket of his suit along with a fresh packet of cigarettes.

he glanced down at the time and mumbled, “fuck, I need to go.” He’d Decided to take Kate to the prom. Being as there was now an even group of them in the friendship group it made sense for them to couple up for prom as no one wanted to bring a real date. Plus, he kind of wanted to bring kate anyway. Yes he was still technically with Anna and yes he loved her. But he couldn’t deny that Kate had really been here for him the past 8 months and they’d definitely grown a hell of a lot closer.

Grabbing his car keys he jogged downstairs, shouting a goodbye to his mum before making his way outside to his sparkly clean Porsche. Yeah, he had money. His parents were both lawyers and rarely spent time caring about him but he got nice gifts so at least they were good for something. Plus, the girls loved his ever changing cars.

After finishing getting dressed, Kate went downstairs to grab a quick bite to eat with her parents, just to kill time before Jacob showed up.

She could feel herself growing more and more nervous about it, as she knew her parents would want pictures and everything. It's not that she minded, it would be nice to have something to remember the night by, it's just that whenever Jacob was around, her parents acted as if they were going out. She didn't understand their need to get involved in whether or not they were, considering it was none of their business. Plus, they weren't, so there's that.

As the bell rang at the front door, she felt a rush of butterflies in her stomach.

"I'll get it," she said, as she darted to the door.

--

Alex stopped the car right in front of Ivy's house, and sat for a few minutes before getting out. He had to gather himself before going in for pictures. In reality he would've preferred to just have honked outside, and for Ivy to walk out, but he wasn't an ass, so he didn't.

He walked up the steps and rung on the bell at the front door, taking a deep breath in preparation. He would just have to put on his best smile, and hopefully it wouldn't take more than five minutes before they were on their way.

Ivy knew Alex hadn’t exactly been thrilled about taking her to prom. In fact, he hadn’t really said much about it to her at all. They’d all been sat together when it was decided that they’d all go together. Jacob had stepped in rather quick to say he’d take kate so then that left them two together. She’d tried to tell him he didn’t have to but he said he would, so here they were.

She reached for the door handle and pulled it open. “Hey!” She smiled up at Alex, her eyes taking in his appearance. He cleaned up nicely and she had to admit that he looked incredibly handsome. It’s just, she felt a little weird going to prom with him. He was Anna’s ex, still one of her best friends but none the less her ex. And when they’d talked about their senior prom years ago, Anna had been with Alex and thought she’s be going with him still.

“Alex! Come in! We haven’t seen you in so long, how’ve you been doing?” Ivy’s mum invited him into the house eagerly. Ivy knew her mum always liked Alex over Jacob.

Ivy smiled awkwardly and closed the door behind Alex. “Let’s get these pictures done dad. Kate and Jacob will be waiting for us.” She urged her dad to hurry up and avoid anymore awkward conversation. She knew it would be only minutes before Anna came up and she wasn’t sure that either of them would be able to deal with that right now. She grabbed hold of Alex’s hand, pulling him across to her. She mumbled quietly to him so only he could hear, “I’m sorry about this.”

“Right then you two let’s get these pictures. Let’s have some brighter smiles both of you.” Ivy’s dad chipped in, camera in hand as he got ready to snap some pictures. It didn’t take long for them to be taken and for her dad to be happy enough with the ones he got. “Right, look after my daughter tonight Alex. I want her home at midnight, no later.” Ivy’s dad was pretty strict, especially after everything that happened with Anna just made him even tighter on her. But right now she was just eager to get out of the house. She grabbed her clutch bag from the side and opened the door. “See you later!”

It didn’t take Jacob long before he was pulling up outside of Kate’s house. He glanced in the mirror, fixing his hair a little before hoping out the car. He made his way up the front steps and knocked on the door. He’d gotten a lot more familiar with kate’s house over the past few months. She’d really been here for him and in turn he’s been there for her. They’d certainly grown a lot closer but he couldn’t help but feel guilty about it. He wasn’t saying that he wanted to be with kate but he was definitely developing feelings. He loved Anna, and he hoped with everything he had that she was still out there and that they’d find her. But kate was crossing his mind to often and it wasn’t right for him to be so excited about another girl when the one he was with could possibly be hurt or even worse, dead.

He didnt want to think like that right right now though. Anna bought him into a mindset of destruction and he didn’t want to drag kate down or let her know just how low he’d gotten. She was his high and he needed that tonight.

His eyes lit lit up as a smile appeared on his face when the door swung open to reveal her. God did she look beautiful. The dark green lace dress she’d picked suited her perfectly. It brought out her eyes and it fit her figure snug. “Wow, you look gorgeous. I’m one lucky man to be taking you to prom.” He chuckled and stepped into the house. Still unable to take his eyes off of her.
