now its been a while since i was in school but if it hasnt changed children in norway are taught abt slavery, the american civil war, segregation, rosa parks, martin luther king jr and such, but in a "general american history" way not black american history way

there is no month dedicated to it in the school system afaik

I don’t think it’s in the curriculum (don’t quote me on that) I wouldn’t say we observe black history month at school but i also feel like that’s been more widespread since after I got done with compulsory school so idk what it looks like now tbh

My final year of English my teacher suggested either focusing a unit on American civil rights or gay rights for like a week or two at one point, (n no one knew what to pick so she picked the gay one so we never did that lol)… so I think it’s partially dependent on what teachers you have as well n how they approach mandatory learning moments

Yes this is how it was for us too though I think on a very surface level espec history after colonization and slavery because then it’s part of world history and there’s more to cover in less space so it becomes more glossed ocer

Now i'm wondering if black history month is only a thing in america and canada

I think the way my teacher did it was like we had to talk about X era and then she picked one point in that era that we worked it so we had like ancient civilization n she picked Mesopotamia n so we didn’t rly learn about egypt or china etc (honestly i only remember learning about Mesopotamia this was so long ago)

n then in upper secondary i too (very Eurocentric) art history’s it might be different for someone who did humanities n not art

I’ve always gotten the impression that it was like an American thing / celabrating African-American culture more specifically but maybe that’s just cos I haven’t interacted much with bhm as a concept beyond what’s shared from social media n that’s usually America centric or Anglocentric by default

ive worked in quite a few kindergartens in oslo and some of them would celebrate both black history month and sami month in february actually!!! so i think people are starting to implement it in the system

this is what i remember from school in norway as well, we learned some surface level american history, mostly in history class but a bit in english class as well, and covered some of really important events and people, but again very surface level
history class was very eurocentric in general, and in english class the us was barely even mentioned for some reason, it was like england, south africa and australia were the only english speaking countries out there

i had never heard of black history month until 3-4 years ago
