yeah, the statue shouldn't have been there in the first place, glad it got thrown in the docks

a really powerfull move, since many of the slaves found their death by drowning.

like imagening a statue of hitler or mussolini in the town, would those be defended too and the bbbbbut history argument isn't good either, a statue is something to honor a person, not to remember history.

if you absolutely want to preserve it, put it in a museum surrounded by the stories and pictures of their victims, in a context to show how horrible they were.

the issue with keeping the statues in museums is that it basically offers a gathering circle for the exact same hate groups, except now the statue is preserved and kept safe so it can't be taken down the same way it was in public

if the statues are shown in a museum at all, it needs to be in photographs alongside the tools and instruments that were used on slaves, not in a complete piece

well if it is surrounded by relicts of people's suffering i don't thing it would be a fun photo op for right wingers

But what has it achieved? The mayor of Bristol has already said they will be putting it in a museum so they haven't really made a change. last time i check as well with the slave trade we were the first country to get rid of slavery and it cost that much that taxpayers who are still alive today were still paying this off in 2015?

Also, in terms of slavery does it mean we should get rid of the colosseum because slaves built it what about the pyramids they were also built by slaves? I mean if you research the slave trade you find out this: European traders found it easier to do business with African intermediaries who raided settlements far away from the African coast and brought those young and healthy enough to the coast to be sold into slavery.

I'm not saying the statue shouldn't have come down but at the end of the day it hasn't achieved much.

a statue is a symbol and maybe the act of tearing it down is also a symbol.  maybe the act of tearing it down is like a performance art in a way.

As a Modern History A-Level Student, I can explain why, with sources, it was up in the first place for those unaware or just interested. This will be long so apologies. There is a tl;dr at the bottom of the comment.

Most major English cities that grew due to the empire, like Bristol and Liverpool, were built off the money of the slave trade as they were port towns and this is seen with the multiple commemorative busts, statues, streets, parks and buildings named after imperialists. Colston, the guy who's statue was removed, even had a marble bust made which you can see here. Victorians used marble was chosen because it cements victorian ideas of white supremacy taken from Greek sculpture (which was actually false, the Greeks painted their statues). It quite literally put them (them the wealthy elite) on a pedestal; This photo was taken after the statue was torn down, which is extremely powerful.

( If you want, you can see how much money went into building Bristol if you watch a house through time which shows the history of Bristol through one house. The house itself was built by a sea captain who worked in the slave trade and was one of many terraces, but most have been destroyed since.)

When the British empire was at its peak post-ww1 ( just over one hundred years ago, so it is technically classed as modern history) it controlled 1/4 of the world's population and, as such, independence from Britain is celebrated once every seven days in countries across the world:  a full list of countries is found here.  The effects of empire are still felt across the world, even in small cultural things. Even in Africa, judges wear a white wig and black gown in court due to remaining Victorian socialisation. There has been a surge in action to scrub away a lot of empirical and colonial history within Britain, due to more people being appalled at the treatment of others by the British and anti-imperialist movements swelling. The current attempts are to change the name of the Cecil Rhodes scholarship and the removal of his statue at oxford uni. if you are unaware of Rhodes he was the founder of the British South Africa Company and later prime minister of cape colony (pre-unionised South Africa) and was extremely racist, critics saying he was the "architect of apartheid" I think his most famous quote is "the more of the world [the british] inhabit the better it is for the human race"  which is.... Yeah, not great, love.

The reason it was still up, as with many pieces, is that it's considered "culturally significant" (I can't find the quote online, but it's in my textbook so I'm sticking to it) for the history of Bristol, and technically it is. It's where they got their money from and to a country with colonial roots, that's important.

So why don't we put it in a museum? We have enough colonial history to be archived that it could be put in a museum. Problem though is that our museums are full hundreds of stolen possessions from areas we controlled. the biggest perpetrator being the British museum where only 1% of the collection is on public display.  There is a James Acaster bit about the absurdity of our museums which I think is relevant to this topic. Even in remote areas, like in Cornwall, there are Egyptian exhibits with stolen mummies when their rich history in fine art and tin mining is shunted to out of season displays. the best thing to do is give it back and ask to use it when we need it for an exhibit, which the v&a museum (occasionally) does.

The best thing we can do is be better and actually teach secondary school kids about the atrocities of British colonialism, because I knew none of this time last year and learnt mainly for my course and to try and do better than my ancestors.  Honestly, I have barely scratched the surface of imperialism so if you can find it and are interested, watch Paxman's series "Empire"; it covers the a-level course pretty well and can explain how it all links far better then I can!

Thank you for reading this absolute mess; I spent four months learning about Empire for this lmaooo. If anyone can see anything glaringly wrong tell me, because honestly after an hour of fact checking this, my brain got fuzzy.

-----

tl;dr; an a-level modern history student infodumps about empire and why the statue was up in the first place. Reason being: he helped make Bristol wealthy and remained because it's "culturally significant".

Oh, of course! My course is really interesting especially when I can actually apply the information lmao. To be British and anti-racist, we need to know why our system is prejudice in this way and most of the time, with anything, it's just due to money.

Because it's modern history, we don't stick to just one topic so we're doing the founding of America currently for coursework. My lecturer was saying how the Sheriffs before reforming to become what would be considered police would have been considered a slave patrol, which is buckwild because it just shows how racism was built into the system.

Anyway, I hope you're safe; I'm going to sleep because I have a class first thing tomorrow! <3
