conformity - in simple terms: changing your behaviour and going along with the group

we got 3 types of ways people conform:

- compliance:
-> this is the lowest level of conformity as it is only a temporary change
-> it's where we outwardly (publicly) go along with the group/majority view but privately disagree with it

example: listening to the same music as your friends and pretending to like it (publicly) but actually you don't like it

-  identification:
-> this is the middle level of conformity
-> we conform to the opinions of the group because there is something about the group that we value but we don't agree with everything the group stands for

example: social roles such as teachers, they go along with school rules because they value their job but may not agree with every school rule

- internalisation:
-> this is the deepest level of conformity
-> we conform to the majority view because we believe it to be true
-> the individual exhibits a permanent change in behaviour and attitudes both privately and publicly

example: becoming a vegetarian for ethical reasons, you stop eating meat and gather a "meat is murder" attitude
there are two explanations for conformity according to deutsch and gerard (1955), those are the desire to be correct and the desire to be liked

- informational social influence (ISI)
-> based on our desire to be right/correct
-> we look to others who we believe to be correct during situational ambiguity (unclear situations) in order to give us information on how to behave in that moment
-> this leads to a permanent change in our behaviour and therefore results in internalisation

example: young people moving from school to university may look at uni students to find out what the appropriate way to behave is, we believe other people have valuable knowledge we don't have

- normative social influence (NSI)
-> based on our desire to fit in/be liked
-> based on norms e.g what is normal in a social group
-> we conform because we believe others will approve and accept us
-> this explanation for conformity results in a temporary change and thus is a cause for compliance

example: phoning a friend prior to going to a party, checking what they are wearing so you fit in, even if what they are wearing isn't your style

STRENGTHS OF CONFORMITY EXPLANATIONS

-> there is research support for NSI
-> in asch's research, some p's told him they had a fear of disapproval
-> they knew the answers were incorrect (controlled condition showed qs to  be easy) but went along anyway
-> when p's were asked to write down answers instead, conformity dropped by 12.5%
-> strength because it shows a desire for social approval is a key driver in conformity

-> both NSI and ISI have real life applications
-> they can both be applied to real life situations and explain why we conform in for example, peer group pressure in terms of fashion and music (NSI) and situational ambiguity such as new school (ISI)
-> strength as it shows how people use NSI and ISI on a daily basis

wops i guess
but we just disagree on environmental views here and there and it is impossible to argue with this family about this bc either they don't know what I'm talking or about or (my dad) will make everything about energy and windmills at a local place.

WEAKNESSES OF CONFORMITY EXPLANATIONS

-> individual differences in NSI
-> it does not accurately predict everyone's behaviour in the same way
-> some people are Naffiliators and have a huge desire to be liked so those people are more likely to conform
-> others may not have a desire to be liked so NSI can't predict conformity in every case

-> individual differences in ISI
-> ISI does not affect everyone's behaviour in the same way
-> asch found that students were less conformist than other p's
-> some people go against the obvious answer because they trust their own knowledge so they don't have the desire to be correct/copy others as they may deem themselves to already be correct
