i always think about sewing as a way to liberate yourself.  if you're able to make your own clothes, regardless of ur gender, ur always able to have self expression.  as a woman u could make urself a pair of pants, or as a man u could make urself a dress when those things aren't available to u.  i always equate sewing to drag queens (or at least the traditioanl older ones) because they all came from sewing, and because they could sew they could express themselves
Its also a way women were able to find their independence, both financially as a seamstress or as a way to be frugal and keep their families warm and clothed
yeah, financially it was a huge thing especially during wartime.  they also were probably able to congregate with each other as an excuse to knit or something, you know
I talked about that in one of my previous grants on embroidery
it was a social thing that women were "allowed" to do with other women away from their husbands

also if we're going to talk about the invention of the sewing machine, it's one of those things that actually freed women from the home.  they didn't have to spend as much time sewing, and they were suddenly free to do other things.
Oh! This is a good one I'm gonna write that down

Its better if men do it, also cus I don't want to do it
Same w knitting?? What man has ever knitted. I've literally never seen it, so weird
I know way more men who knit or crochet than women

Historically it's been a womens "chore" to keep their families warm and alive though, which is no easy or  unimportant task.
For sure, i been watching alot of the crochet compilations and there is a surprising amount of boys/men* between

That's the subject I used on my last grant (textile mending)
while I think I could use, or at least mention it again, I wanna expand into other areas, since its the same organization who read my last grant proposal.

Ohh yea i understand! Expanding is good

To add to the invention of the sewing machine: sewing and making fabric was one of the first Real industry jobs targeted for women and started the whole idea that women can work too
and earn their own money
when the industrialism started

i’m not sure of my terms in english i could explain so much better in finnish but i hope you get me
i think it could be yet another approach

Amazing!
the organization that I'm writing to helps enrich young/new artists - so I have a handful of work samples and they'd essentially fund me learning and building a bigger body of work.
