Honestly I hardly follow strict technique "rules" in my own art - I only use them when I teach workshops.
The more you do it, you'll develop your own style, and figure out which stitches work for those styles.
When I teach workshops I show them like, 6-8 stitches but most folks pick 1-2 they like most.

I pretty much only use satin stitch, back stitch, and stem stitch in my work.
