somehow manga's 2 most popular people (naoki urasawa and junji ito) i didn't like their works of? i love their art obviously, and ito's horror is lovely. but i don't really care about the characters or feel emotional attachment whatsoever, which is very important for me when reading.
junji ito is understandable since it really isnt about characters. urasawa is good but i get it if it doesnt hit for you. a good point to bring up is that these authors are very (maybe a bit over)hyped in the west, mostly because they tend to cater to the tastes of western audiences. theyre popular here because a lot of people know them and old comics people decided theyre good lol. im not saying theyre bad, i enjoy both of their works, but thankfully you dont have to read whats currently popular.
idk if that makes sense just wanted to talk about it lol
@mimi309 i literally just saw your reply and yea i agree! i can see why they're so popular in the west bc urasawa is very much inspired by western culture, and junji ito takes a lot from lovecraftian horror.
but i am also happy with just reading whatever peaks my interest, when i first started i picked the top 10 best/popular manga and started from there, but i feel like other manga, eden: it's an endless world, (popular in japan) or sunny (more indie) also are very nice.
totally. thankfully the manga industry is HUGE and theres new stuff coming out all the time (honestly to the creators' detriment but thats another conversation) so pretty much everyone can find at least one thing they like!
