hamsters live more underground than anything, so like the others have said, you need something that your hamster can go down in and not up on new layers
they don't go up, going up is becoming prey to birds and foxes

also, in stores you never find anything that's even remotely good for animal care, they are always way too small, even the big ones. because if they were to sell stuff at the actually appropriate and needed size, it would be too big and too expensive and no one would buy pets. and that's a bad business model for a pet shop.

also, do try to clean the cage when it's awake. they aren't fully only night nocturnal, they also occasionally wake up during the day. but do try to get the cleaning schedule according to the sleep schedule. your hamster will thank you for it with a very long life

ahh ty for the videos, i will try to adjust more with them tips! i never could find any of these types of videos when i try looking through searches. usually it would give me stuff revolving smaller cages that i already know wouldnt have been any better for him, even if i didnt know much to begin with. ill definitely come back here to keep updates on him and try to make his living space better for him. i want to give him the best that i can offer

i remember my parents kept one when i was about 8? but all i really did was look at him and hold him when my parents had him out to run. i had a dog and bearded dragon that passed to old age about a year/2 years ago

yeah i found he didnt like them that much besides the sand bowl he would go up to roll around in. i will look for some online that can be more suitable definitely
edit
i didnt wake him yet, i have tried not to. if that is the case, ill try not to wake him. its just rough when i have to sleep for work when he starts to wake up, and dont have time in my mornings to tend to him :-(

I would genuinely recommend an aquarium that you put a handmade lid on with air vents (we had gerbils in big aquarium bowls where we made wooden frames on top that were like 80% chicken wire, because the plastic lids they come with would just close off the air flow too much)
well, to be fair, hamsters aen't play pets or anything. you pretty much have them to just live their life and if you're both awake at the same time, you can watch him go about his day. they're not generally as interactive as other animals and if you want to give him some play time, build different things and rearrange his terrarium often enough for variety (though don't change the sleeping place too much, but definitely where and how you feed him)
also they don't actually need tending as such. like they are self-cleaning and all. you basically just need to clean the terrarium and offer variety. I think having more than one hamster would actually be better, but honestly, they aren't animals you'd take out and let play on stuff as much as you would for instance rats. (hamsters are good climbers, but not as much as rats for instance)
hamsters can be playful and such, but honestly, don't get one if you want a pet to play with. other animals are way more suited for that
