ours were happy w/ a house and bedding they could drag around for a "bedding box" (and they did)

i think ours lived around 5 years but we're also estimating because they were from the humane society... and then we had to separate them and get two big cages cause they decided they hated each other one day... but other then that, they were a fun time (names were mochi and muffin, we had one a long time ago called booboo which is why i as a child called hazelnuts booboo nuts) 

chinchillas live a long time (ours lived around 10 years) and we had a good experience with ours. they aren't quite as hands on as other pets that you just like snuggle with like guinea pigs (which also have a good lifespan on them of 5+ in our experience) but he was still a card and we loved him (dusty)  also we've always been bad about getting our pets super "handly" so that could be a factor...
