why would keeping a generally respectful tone towards your parent/w your parents present be an american thing, let alone a weird thing
I stumbled over the "cursing in front of someone being disrespectful" a bit as well
like if you don't cuss out a person but just have a foul language in their vincinity, I (and neither anyone in my family) would consider it disrespectful to them
as far as I observed it in Germany and Luxembourg, cussing is only considered disrespectful if you're in a very controlled hierarchic setting - like doing so in front of your boss at work is a nono, but depending on the matter it's ok in front of co-workers, especially if it's not to degrade another person or their actions. though then again, you wouldn't do it in front of someone of a certain age and up, no matter their relationship with them, just because they have a different cultural understanding of the use of those words, due to them growing up in times with a stronger censure of certain language in public discourse and social functions.
It's very much a thing of setting, surrounding and reason and not something always considered disrespectful where I'm from, so I did have the same reaction as Alam
but then again, this also could just be a cultural thing and Alam and me are the odd one's out
it's not in front of someone tho, it's in front of your parents, which is a hierarchical setting. it's more of an upbringing thing than a cultural thing i think. if you were raised in a household where cursing was ok, then doing so in front of your parents isnt disrespectful, but actively disregarding how you were raised in your parents vicinity it could be considered disrespectful. i could be the odd one out here, i often am, my family is much more old fashioned/traditional when it comes to family dynamics and values than most modern families, in norway that is, i was more so confused about the american comment, it seemed kinda uncalled for

ahhh, I kinda get it but also from personal experience (meaning those around me that I know well enough about this) do not really have this strict a hierarchy between their parents anymore, especially after a certain age. Like sure, they'll always be your parents, but there comes a time where they have to start to respect you as a grown-up person and see you on the same level as other grown-ups.
Like cursing was very much not ok in our household, but not because my parents considered it a disrespectful thing towards them but more because it's not something you should encourage because everything has it's time and place? So maybe that's where the difference in my specific case comes from. They just didn't want us to be "potty mouthed", but now we're grown-ups and most of the things don't reflect as badly on them anymore. Like when we cuss in front of others and our parents are present, they have absolutely no problem in saying "that's not how you were raised and you know it".

(but yeah, the american comment was a bit out of left field. though I kinda get it because some regions in the US seem to be still very traditionalist - if you want to call it that - compared to the majority of European countries in family matters and such. It's just a different emphasis on certain things. Plus I feel like whenever I'm confronted with these things from the US, it's via mommy-vloggers/bloggers and the like and those are usually very traditional and religion-based, which has a different flavour to it as well. Though I do realise that this is my personal bias on the matter and not really a true reflection on americain family dynamics. You have families like these here as well, but that's really just those that are seriously dedicated to religion - Christianity in my case - and so it's often something that's linked more to a Christian upbringing compared to a general one. If that makes sense. But honestly, those small sociological differences and the nuances in tone are quite interesting.)

see, this is what I mean
it's something that seems to be tied extremely to religion in the countries I'm from and not really a general family matter
(sorry for using you as an example Sylvan, but considering you're from a part in Germany that's pretty similar in religiousness as Luxembourg, it compares best despite being a different country)

I’m not sure what movies or shows
you watch that made you interpret
my comment as an “American thing” lol
but due to I have white friends who think
nothing of it, I’m led to believe it’s a culture thing.
It’s just something black people don’t do
depending on how one was raised.
