I really don't agree with the statement, that people aren't discriminated against because they're white. I am a readhaired person; and with that follows very, very light skin. I've ben called a bag of flour, freckleface, ghost, dead person and so on for all 18 years I have been alive. To say that I am not getting discriminated because I am white is really bullshit.

I know it's nothing compared to the discrimination black people go through, but it is still there.
poc can be discriminatory against white people but they can't be racist...
if the people who bullied you were white themselves they also weren't racist...

I've lived most of my life in a "black" neighbourhood, so they weren't white. And I never said reverse- racisms, I only meantioned discrimination.
But you said you didn't agree with this statement: "people aren't discriminated against because they're white"\

you are not being discriminated against because you're white, you are experiencing discrimination because you're a redhead, they're two different things, and not interchangeable. One is based on racism (people make fun of me because I have dark skin) and the other is based on the fact that you have an uncommon hair color (people make fun of me because I am pale and red).

I wouldn't call myself ignorant for saying that a hairstyle isn't "owned" or "belongs" to a specific race.
It's ignorant to ignore the fact that you wouldn't be sacked from your job for having dreads but a poc would be.

The bullying you described that you've experienced in the past, I experienced too - but that isn't the same as poc discrimination! It's bullying!
I am not ignoring that at all ???
And yes, It's discrimination, not just bullying.
You're ignoring it by not recognising that this is why it's wrong to say "dreads don't belong to one race".

I'll admit, the right way around this isn't to exactly ban the hairstyle - but for now, that's what it is cause there are still closed minded people out there. Also, you keep saying your's is dreads, can we see a picture?

but hey, if white people can't get dreads, then what's the big deal? if we can't get dreads, then we can't get dreads, so how is it an issue? comparing the photos posted in the thread, most white people with "dreads" just have matted hair that's been matted into thread like thingys, but they're not dreads, so what's the issue?

One thing I wanted to ask, doesn't hair matt when it's a mixture of not brushing and washing?

Cause I don't brush mine as I loose my curls and just get frizz, I only brush it right before I wash my hair to make it easier to wash - yet it doesn't matt? Unless I'm missing what matting is, as mine does become thousands of knots :/
The knots is what matting is
Ah so it's like the beginning of matting.
I feel like this makes my hair seem gross by not brushing it but it is a common thing with people with my hair type (not saying this in comparison to dreads or anything, I'm more stating - please don't think I like my hair matted)

The issue is that a lot of white people call their matted hair dreads, or roll their hair into matts to try and resemble dreads because it's "trendy" for alternative white people to do.

What kind of hair do you have? o: If your hair mats easily, you should probably use more conditioner or put oils in your hair to keep it soft.

so what really needs to be done is teaching people they don't have dreads?

Apparently all black originated things can't be done by people of other races without it being racist..
A really weird definition on racism if u ask me

Pretty much. Teaching people that matted hair is NOT dreads and if you mat your hair with the purpose of making them look similar to dreads, you're racist. If people could just learn those things...
