Why on earth did you ever find 4chan appealing

It's a trash site, bunch of cowards being bullies behind a screen, too chicken shit to be assholes publicly

Only thing good to come out of 4 chan is bronies... and weirdly the bronies tend to be nice unlike most of the 4chan chuds
i really shouldn't even entertain this with a response and i can tell you never actually hung out on there before like 2010. like back in 2004 if you wanted to talk about anime online it was /a/ or gaiaonline lmao that was your choices.

but /toy/ /cgl/ and /a/ are still some of the best places online to discuss the niche hobbies im into. everyone on /a/ likes the same manga i do. i hadn't been on 4chan in literallly over six years i think? idk it had been a really long time up until quarantine i've been back on my bullshit. i really  been looking to be anonymous lately im sick of people being able to dig into my post history.

i like imageboard culture more and more these days because im sick of the hatemail i get on reddit.com. it really is nice to be anonymous sometimes and not have people stalk your account. like i quit being a mod on reddit in may and i still get death threats every now and then that are super specific and based on my post history. like sometimes i just wanna be nobody.

of course /b/  was never good. i'm like actually afraid to click on /b/ again nowadays. i did check out /pol/ after the election to see them COPE but it was mostly being brigaded and they were getting clowned on hardcore it was kind of a riot.

4chan is no worse than reddit.com and doesn't pretend to be woke when it aint like redditors do pisses me off all the high horse attitudes when theyre literally exactly as shit as the rest of the internet.

and theres my sincere answer to your insincere question lmao
it's odd to me when people talk about imageboard websites like they're super scary, when reddit is the biggst cesspit there ever was
lmao THANK you lol

That makes sense, I found it in 2007 and just really disliked the vibe of the place, but it always did have nerd cred behind it so I can understand the appeal of certain boards

Also as fascinating as chris chan is fuck 4 chan for bulling her holy shit

The type of trolling they engage in just makes me uncomfortable I guess, maybe it wasnt like that in 2004? Also it spawned from 2channel which has netto uyuko origins... ):
2ch doesnt have nationalist origins- nationalists ended up gathering there. you've got it backwards. first comes the anonymous space- then come the nationalists same as how happened on 4chan.
I think that's why I dont like anonymous imageboard culture in general. Obviously toxic circles exist on all facets of the internet... never denied reddit is problematic.... just seems like the trolling and bigoted shit is even worse on those sites cuz ppl feel more safe and anonymous, so it's in even fuller force or at least more blatant I guess

But what you said about it being one of the only places to watch anime and read manga at the time makes sense, I was spoiled and had crunchy roll when I was 13
anonymity is liberating. which is good and also bad.

I guess you could argue platforms like youtube, reddit and Twitter are even worse because people have a public face, so they are more subtle about their own toxicity, which means it takes longer to crack down on it

And I know 4chan is more than just /b but idk they way they talked on /b and the scandals... idk it was too much 4 me, too crude honestly, hate how ppl talk to each other when they feel anonymous

it's almost odd to me that more people use the internet than ever (pretty much every one is 'very online' these days), and yet the internet feels deader than it has ever done

also I think 'bullying culture' on the internet is in many ways a lot worse. people were targeted, and it's never a great thing, but it didn't feel as personal and vindictive as it does now. people will go after others with almost a completely righteous anger like they're on some kind of crusade

then again i could be wrong, i'm slightly on the young side to remember the early internet days

back in the day when we bullied people online we did it because bullying is fun and now we do it because we think we have the moral high ground.

and like to me its more offensive the way twitter bullies. like at least nobody was pretending to be a good person while they bullied chris chan they knew damn well what they were doing. now you can bully an actress off the internet in the name social justice.

The latter is probably more insidious but the former makes me more uncomfortable on a visceral level TBH

It's just a petty personal thing

Also think a lot of this cancel culture shit is a bunch of overblown petty drama, honestly think being mean just for the sake of it... just because u can, is like fucking worse, or mocking ppl cuz you see them as inferior to u, rather than some petty political misunderstanding

But idk we seem to have different perspectives, just gonna leave it at that tbh

idk if you saw this, but a student from a uni in the US emailed her professor that she believed the syllabus of the module he was teaching (and that she was due to take) didn't have enough authors of colour. He emailed her back that there were several authors of colour on the syllabus, defended his syllabus and said he'd take her criticisms into consideration for the next year he taught it. He was a little patronising in his reply, but not rude.

This wasn't good enough for the student, so she posted his reply on twitter, doxxed him (revealed his full name, uni and the subject he taught) and encouraged people on Twitter to email the dean and complain about this professor's behaviour. This thread got THOUSANDS of RTs. Tons of people replied saying they emailed on her behalf. She basically tried to hold some kind of morality crusade in order to get this guy fired for basically nothing. It was like a week before the academic year was about to start - was she expecting him to change his entire syllabus for one student??

idk how people can think doing something like this is okay

yea i talked about this with my sister professors are actually afraid to teach more complicated things in their classes because they know students will do shit like this. like philosophy professors are actually holding back on subjects because of how fragile and out for like revenge zoomers are.

i would but i have no idea what to search to find it. it didn't make big big news or anything and hype died out within a day (thankfully). would help if i could remember the uni name - it was a fairly well known liberal arts college

www.google.com/amp/s/time.com/5735403/cancel-culture-is-not-real/%3famp=true

Honestly how I feel....

I think the shift is people used to prey on the weak and now marginalized people are standing up for themselves and ppl who used to get away with being bigots or trolls just for the sake of it dont like it, also even mere criticism seems to be overblown as cancel culture now... like I love contrapoints but her video about being cancelled was disingenuous as hell

I do agree that some people take it too far and don't assert themselves in a healthy way, sure, sometimes ppl are just entitled Karen's and I never defended that

But yes absolutely stamp out bigotry, people shouldn't have to take that fucking shit and I'm glad we have a culture now where its cooler to bully the bullies than it is the weak
