We've really come a long way, but there's still a long way to go.
Thats horrible! There are still a lot of stigmas and misinformation regarding ADHD and related ones. My dad didnt wanted me to get diagnosed because when he was a child the doctors and people didnt treat him well, he has dyslexia and probably adhd too. I hope we get to a point where we don't feel judged or that we have to hide who we are.
My mom has ADHD, but she has super hyperactive ADHD, and also Bipolar 1. Back when she was diagnosed with ADHD in the 80s, the meds really did kinda "zombify" kids, because they just didn't know as much about dosage and there weren't as many options to try. So she never got medicated, because my grandma didn't feel like it was safe, and back then it may not have been.

My mother was literally locked in windowless rooms and isolated for "not listening" and "being disruptive" when really, she had severe ADHD, and was partially deaf.
That's horrendous. Im glad we have more or less changed as a society. But we still have a long way to go.

My Dad would yell at me for not understanding a math problem right away or not being able to focus bc of the TV.

Oh norwegian health institute says this on their website tho "ADHD er ikke bare forbeholdt barn. Voksne som aldri fikk diagnosen som barn, kan utvikle mer åpenbare symptomer senere i livet." idk if I translate right but "adhd isn't prinarily for kids. Adults who never got the duagnosis as a child, can develop more noticeable symptoms later in life" makes sense

For me it's hard to rly tell. I feel in some ways it's better as an adult but I have also had the benefit of having mental help since I was really young for other reasons. I probably wouldn't have known about my ADHD if I didn't already need treatment for anxiety.
School was hardest for me so finally not having to worry about studying, homework, and tests has made a huge difference.
I mean yeah knowing from a younger age probably makes a huge difference
when I was researching prior to my diagnosis, everything I read says its gets better as you get older, not worse, but I feel like that took into account folks who knew they had ADHD, and were receiving medication and therapy and learning how to live with it, whereas undiagnosed adults just seem to get worse because we have no practice
Yeah, it's too broad. Of course those who have been in treatment learning how to cope and likely being medicated will see an improvement with age. Anyone who hasn't has likely subconsciously learned to mask and will stay stagnant or get worse.
I was diagnosed kind of late considering I was seeing a therapist and psychiatrist since I was 5 or 6 and the suspicions didn't arise until I was 15 and then sent to a psychologist for testing.
My friend is struggling a lot to get her son a diagnosis, she had him start with a psych and he went to half the visits, and she didn't like something that happened in a visit, and when she spoke up on behalf of her son, they dropped him as a patient, and now she has to start all over.
But this kid really needs some help, and so does momma, he's a handful, and not just in a "oh, kids are hyperactive" way, but it's just nonstop, there is absolutely no amount of activity that wears this child out. His teachers are like begging her to get him medicated.

How old is he? It can be difficult to get a diagnosis under the age of 15/16 in the US bc of how hard the meds can be for someone so young. It's still possible, just more of a process.

A huge phenomenon right now is folks who were diagnosed as depressed, bipolar, or BPD/ODD when they were younger, are now finding out they actually just had ADHD
its a science, and science changes with new information

I have a question. I see a lot of people get diagnosed by a psychologist, how is the process of getting diagnosed? like do you need to do some cognitive, hearing and seeing tests like if you were diagnosed by a neurologist? or do you get just like a list of symptoms?

He's only 8, she had to wait at least this long for him to be big enough to even tolerate the medication.

My psychiatrist sent me to one to do an attention test. I had to pay attention and click something on a screen for a period of time. Ofc I didn't last long lol.

My friend was diagnosed with a super short questionnaire.
I was diagnosed with a super in-depth assessment that took several sessions and it included intellectual/cognitive tests to rule out other types of developmental delays.

Def needs to find a better psych though and lots of patience bc getting a diagnosis that young takes at least a year.

Yeah and she'd gotten him halfway through the process before the clinic dropped him as a patient sad
