Ehhhh, not quite, he lived out his days pretty damn poor.
Somehow this reminded me how interesting it would be to know where my ancestors are from
Same, all I know is that my grand's families fled from Poland, Germany and Morocco and that my great grandma was from Algeria, I think.
I know with 100% certainty that there has to be at least Finnish and German/Danish.. probably Norwegian too but I'm starting to have my doubts for some reason.

Interesting. I also probably have roots in the Levant because Jewish.

I personally think no but it's more because I'd rather see historical accuracy of diverse stories as well.
Like, watching films such as Belle (which isn't 100% accurate but at the end of the day, some of the story is gonna get stretched).

Or getting a film about someone such as Henry Box Brown etc.
I like getting historically accurate/as close to media because I love history and I love discovering the past of such incredible people who struggled with diversity and still achieved incredible things, whether that's people of lower class, race, sexuality +

I don't think it helps anyone to pretend that racism never happened in the past, I think we should focus on telling everybody's stories instead.

There's a famous film about a Jewish woman who was basically a sexual slave for some Nazi commanders at a concentration camp. After the war, she becomes wealthy and one of the Nazi commanders becomes a hotel porter. They meet when she's a guest of the hotel and they have a weird and fucked up sexual affair.

It's called The Night Porter and was obv v controversial~ when it came out lol

Lately I've been wondering if dad's paternal family might possibly be Sami, but I don't have any evidence for it.

At least they have the excuse of it coming out in 1974? I guess. Jeez...

I've been wondering if my grandmother's family might have east Russian or even Mongolian roots but I have no evidence of that either. It's interesting, this stuff. I would do a DNA test but then again, no.

i find that people who moan about historical accuracy rarely have the historical knowledge and expertise they think they do. claiming that one of the biggest participants of the african slave trade had no black people in the 1800s is an absurd and ahistorical statement.

I was talking to my uncle on the phone once (which probably has happened 5 times in my entire life because he's really something else) and he mentioned that there might be Russians on my dad's maternal side. He has been doing a lot of those heritage things allegedly but I'm uncertain. It would potentially explain why people think I am Russian, I guess.

yeah but picturing black people in the 1800s as wealthy n free people does not make sense, does it

tbf it's not trying to be historically accurate. The relationship is just basically a stand in for a bigger ethical question surrounding bdsm, perverse sexuality and fascism. A bit like Salo.
