Henna + Cultural Appropriation
Account deleted

I think its nice to share culture especially when it comes to art. My aunt did henna on a school event and everybody liked it. I would think its weird if they start to copy this kind of shit when they marry, have a baby party or do it on a daily base. However I did never feel triggered about a henna subject yet so I dont think anybody tried to steal my culture. I dont care as long as it doesnt get too mainstream and lost where it came from!
Let people have fun with our traditions. Lets not act too serious about EVERYTHING
but lets be respectful enough to appreciate and honor the tradition.. like dont sell henna in a bershka shop or sth

World famous

the way the concept of cultural appropriation is applied is so toxic. it's a good thing to share our cultures with each other.

as an indian i don't see why white people getting henna is cultural appropriation? i know it's deeply rooted in indian culture (and other middle eastern and african cultures as well) but it's also a cool way to get temp tattoos and if ur having fun with it i don't mind
there are much worse offenses like wearing a bindi to coachella
Imagine wearing a hijab to coachella omg
how do people think its ok to wear a bindi to coachella lmao I-

I think we should draw limits between what's cultural appreciation and what's cultural appropiation. If you know nothing about the culture of some activity, clothing, hairstyle, or whatever you're taking from a culture that you're not from, then I'd consider that as if you're using cultures as a trend. If you actually know the meaning of whatever you're taking from any culture, and understand the origin, then I'd consider that as cultural appreciation.
Exactly this :-) I also think it should be respected ! I think what triggered me to do this post, is an article I saw about top 10 celebs who popularised henna and none of them were arab or indian :-L Shits only cool if westerners do it I guess

like i would say cultural appropriation is when you take something from a culture and use it in a way that is mocking said culture, like wearing a native american headpiece to coachella or putting chopsticks in a bun in your hair. but if someone takes something from a culture and uses it in the way its intended, respectfully, its not cultural appropriation, you cant just use that term because youre offended that another race really likes it and wants to use it as intended

you cant own a culture, you do not decide who gets to do what and who dont, if people are using it mockingly however thats a completely different story

id also like to add if you want to use henna and care a lot about not offending people you probably shouldnt do it because there will always be people offended when it comes to these things, mostly other white people though, and if youre a part of that culture youre of course allowed to be offended but remember that being territorial about your culture is a symptom of facism
