I guess it depends on fundamental values, I don't think criminals should be punished but rather rehabilitated so they can potentially become useful for society again.

i'd rather kill all pedophiles than see them get to live in neighborhoods where they can commit again tbh.

also who's to say those criminals wouldn't fake rehabilitation and get out to commit crimes again? I think the world is uncivilized to this day with r*pe and murder still happening. Death is probably the worst punishment and not a scapegoat for getting away with a crime.
