and you should be able to catch pokemon once you get pokeballs

No you press X on the joycon. This is what you will see, where the black box is it will say what you were to do if you had anything. Mine says Challenge the next Gym Leader in Circhester Stadium. If you sit on the screen for a moment it does change to other news especially if you have the expansion pass.

I mean yeah you can check the map to see where the location is if you aren't in the town so you know which way to go, but in the box, it will remind you what you were needing to do. So you can press + for that
