for some it is necessary due to lack of accessibility and resources to be properly diagnosed and with a self diagnose they can move to trying to get a handle on things. But for the majority that has access to a diagnoses self diagnosing is dangerous

i feel like it depends on what it is...i haven't been diagnosed with social anxiety but i know i have it. but when it comes to like more "serious" stuff i don't think you should self diagnose.

Yes, cause please put in the effort to get the actual diagnosis, when you gonna self diagnose. For your own sake, but also for the aldready diagnosed people. And be careful to go around and risking spreading incorrect information, when you in fact don’t really know if you know. Ask yourself why you are self diagnosing the first place? Lack of resources? Lack of motivation? A self diagnosis is not helpful if you only looking for a label to shout out at any convenient situation. But it can be helpful for your own understanding and healing journey while you are already in the process of getting professional help. There’s no problem in discussing and opening up about your symptoms and struggles with someone you trust, who can and want to listen. But the moment you choose to put a label on anything, you want to be careful -really careful. <33

As an example:
i myself, were [carefully, subtly and lowkey] self diagnosing myself w depression from around my teenage years, as it’s a pretty well known diagnosis, and in the search for answers, that’s what the internet told me. Turned out, when I eventually got professional help; I wasn’t too far off, but I had in fact not depression. I have dystymia, which is still pretty close to my initial thoughts.

So yeah, it was helpful and soothing for me to have a somewhat of an answer when I had still no clue. And now that I know for sure, I can redirect my focus on what I need to focus on ^^

But at the same time, that’s a good example of why you shouldn’t walk around and tell people what you are dealing with, if you don’t know. Had I done so, I would’ve ended up spreading misinformation, explaining depression from a perspective of someone who’s not clinically depressed; but dystimic. Yeah?

I don’t mind self diagnosing, but you just gotta be respectful of yourself and others in the meanwhile as you await professional evaluation<333

Because anxiety is easy to know u have in a way right, if u get panic attacks or are not able to be in social situations etc etc, you know you have anxiety (also saying "I have anxiety" could mean a diagnosis but also feeling anxiety like everyone can feel, diagnosis or not), but with other stuff its more intricate to diagnose and its harder to see yourself in an objective way, so its harder to say you have that for sure
I know some people think both anxiety and depression is ok to self diagnose, but I don't think depression is easy to diagnose urself with, because the symptoms might come from many different things, like I could probably diagnose myself w depression but I know it stems from different diagnosies and its not a diagnosis in itself for me, but that is hard to figure out yourself
Anxiety can be part of many disorders of course but if anxiety is ur only symptom, its easy to say u have anxiety imo
