hamsters live more underground than anything, so like the others have said, you need something that your hamster can go down in and not up on new layers
they don't go up, going up is becoming prey to birds and foxes
also, in stores you never find anything that's even remotely good for animal care, they are always way too small, even the big ones. because if they were to sell stuff at the actually appropriate and needed size, it would be too big and too expensive and no one would buy pets. and that's a bad business model for a pet shop.
also, do try to clean the cage when it's awake. they aren't fully only night nocturnal, they also occasionally wake up during the day. but do try to get the cleaning schedule according to the sleep schedule. your hamster will thank you for it with a very long life
yeah i found he didnt like them that much besides the sand bowl he would go up to roll around in. i will look for some online that can be more suitable definitely
edit
i didnt wake him yet, i have tried not to. if that is the case, ill try not to wake him. its just rough when i have to sleep for work when he starts to wake up, and dont have time in my mornings to tend to him :-(
I would genuinely recommend an aquarium that you put a handmade lid on with air vents (we had gerbils in big aquarium bowls where we made wooden frames on top that were like 80% chicken wire, because the plastic lids they come with would just close off the air flow too much)
