Poll: Are you good at coming up with assignment topics?
Help me!

In nine days, I have to hand in a one-page outline with an idea for the master's thesis that I'll be writing next term. The problem is, I still don't know what to write about. I'm studying gender studies, but since it's a very broad and interdisciplinary subject, anything that can be categorised as social science is basically fine. At this point I'm really starting to get desperate, so any suggestions are welcome!

gender studies / social science are so broad, are there any particular things (even not exactly related to those topics) that you're interested or knowledgeable in?

Anything more specific within the subject that interests you more than other parts?

Answering both of you: No, not really. I've written assignments about all sorts of different things during my studies, and there's not really any recurrent theme in those. No matter what, I'll need to do a lot of research on theories and stuff because I've not read much of the course literature throughout the years.

Do you want to do something that is purely research in books or collect your own empirical data too?

If you have some experience with designing experiments, that is always fun.
Or you could do Film analysis but that's a bit boring and done too often imo.

Maybe research into the different way the covid crisis affectes men women, marginalized people in different ways with a local aspect eg your state/country.

Or how the media presented male vs female medical experts or something about the conspiracy believers and the dynamics (I believe there are way more men active in those groups, might be interesting to do some research abt that)

- Woman/womanly
A discussion about the term "woman" and "womanly" and if there is something that can be called it (the discussion will be based on scientific studies and discussions where the term is debated as well set in certain context) - ofc be vary of the fact that the outlook changes depending on when it was written

A discussion on how the look on the term changes and how society has an effect on it - by doing this you should also be able to discuss whether or not society actually has an effect and if possible if it is still true today

How conflict changes gender norms in times of conflict - How women became a part of the working force during wars (expecially during 2ww) but reverts back to their traditional roles right after
- I would take the years in the 40's and 50's

Not really that strong in genderstudies but I hope this helps?? Sorry if I have misunderstood something

This is a good question, and I'm not entirely sure yet. I have zero experience with doing interviews and stuff like that, so I'm not sure this would be the time to experiment with that... Doing surveys or like internet ethnography are definitely options I'm open to though.

Those are good suggestions! I've actually considered both corona and conspiracy theories, maybe in combination. I think I need to have a look at whether there has been a lot of research on conspiracy theories already. I feel like much of the work about that has been done by journalists, but I might be wrong.

Or the different reception of a controversial movie like Ghostbusters in different media platforms (reddit, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram,...) and the gender ratios of those spaces.

Yes I'm a media/communication science major oops all those ideas are connected to media because my brain works like that.

Idk how much you care about organized religions, but there has been a feminist uprising in the catholic church lately, many women who volunteered for years want to have more power and positions only man are allowed to have atm, Mary mother of Jesus is a central figure for them and Mary of Magdalena.
