As someone who is part of the lbtq community i thought I would spread some awareness about some myths about the trans community! Maybe you know all of these already but its still worth it to me if i educate just 1 person.
"Being trans is a mental illness"
Being trans itself is not a mental illness. However, many trans people do struggle with mental illness. Especially black trans women are prone to suicide. It's true that unforentnly it's a lot of mentall illness in the trans community but just being trans does not automatically make you "mentally ill" or have a mental illness!
"Being trans isn't real. People only do it for attention/hop on a trend."
No just no. Trans people have always existed however, with the populatity of social media and acess to talk to people word wide and how much safer it is for trans people to be open and the improved medical treatment it may feel more "common" for trans people to exist but it's very offensive to say that people are trans just for attention because it's simply not true.
"A man will always be a man and a woman will always be a woman"
Gender is a spectrum. it's true that a bioogical man will always be a man biologically (because of genes and dna) however, anyone can transision (or not) to become the wanted gender and it's very invalidating to tell a trans person they are biologically this or that because they are trans. Women can have "male" organs. Doesn't make them any less woman if that's what they identify as.
"You need gender dysphoria to be trans"
"Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from the sex that they were assigned at birth. " You can be a biological female that transitions into a man or perhaps a non-binary person that was comftorable as their original gender and that doesn't make you any less trans. There are many different types of stages and some HATE their body or physical self while others are okay. It's very invalidating for other trans people to be told "you are not trans enough because you dont suffer as much as other trans peoplle".. Every trans person deserves love and support.
Do you have any questions? Any more myths that need to be debunked?I'm glad to help.
