Since I was little I understood when I was dreaming sometimes when it was common or repeating dreams. I knew I had experienced that dream before. Usually I was having nightmares, so I made myself wake up to avoid being hurt or killed. I do this even today, when I have a scary dream and want to wake up to avoid it. Please tell me if anybody else does this - I have not met a person with this experience, lolol.
I am often aware that I am in a dream, but I don't get to "control" my dream when I try to. I have tried "tests" to confirm that I am dreaming, so that I could fly or change the dream - but my "dream-self" (as I call it when I'm in a dream) is pretty smart. They will not make it easy to confirm that I am dreaming. I learned you could "poke" in the middle of your hand while dreaming (by also doing it when you are awake), so when I lucid dreamed I could test it. The finger did not go "through" my hand or something else weird, but it felt real and hurt. Therefore I could not "confirm" that I was dreaming, even though I knew it.
