for whatever reason, like if you don't want the dog anymore will a vet put it down for you? i thought they only do that if the dog is very sick

i know shelters do if they don't find a home for the dog. but if you own a dog can you just take it to get put down because you don't have money to take care of it anymore, or something?? wh

well i'm sure they use it as a last resolt, but yeah if you don't wanna keep a dog you are allowed to put them down
but i mean it costs more than giving it to new home so why would you do that

i mean... shit gets heavy, but esp older folk ask or even hire people to put their animals down with a gun since that's cheaper :/ my mother's parents did that to their cats and like,,, yeah, there's a reason i don't call 'em my grandparents

yea, ive heard of some shelters refusing to put down dogs because they felt like they still had a life to live. but i think most vets just listen to the owners if they tell them to put down their dog

ooof the fact that you're from finland (like me) somehow makes that sound even more morbid, i'd be terrified if my parents had access to guns
like i can understand it better when ppl are from the usa with what their lenient gun policy and health insurance complications

as long as the dogs were suffering then there's at least some hint of justice, otherwise putting an animal down, especially one that was special to the family is... rather disturbing

my parents were hunters so of course they had guns... and there's never been anything terrifying about that, excatly because we don't have such a shitty gun policy than usa. not all the random people can just get a gun, you need a reason to have it. and it's pretty fucking strict how you need to store them, carry them around etc. i can tell that our EMPTY gun cabinet weighted 200 kg just because nobody wouldn't be able to steal it

my stepdad shoot 4 of our dogs i think and of course those were extreme situtations
that's living in countryside,  there's not such a thing than 24/7 vet

In the US, most people utilize
no kill shelters if there’s nothing wrong
with the animal.
There are also instances where
people surrender the animal
in order for it to get medical care
if they can’t afford it
instead of just putting it down or
taking it home to suffer
the animal is usually then offered up
for adoption once it’s well.

shooting animals
sounds barbaric and inhumane

yeah, i know that. i'm glad things are well with your family at least on that front - i know of few finns who have guns without a reason such as hunting. i don't know specifics besides that kossu feat. a gun is a combo i wish i'll never witness with my own two eyes

i'm 100% a city dude so i'll never understand the "rusticness" of finnish countryside (which i'd call the genuine finnish experience), i only know about criminal circles and poverty. yet my city's small enough to not have 24/7 vet either, and despite being poor, i'd still take my animals to either a rescue center or the vet for the service because i feel like they deserve it

i mean the dog might not die immediately from being shot n then it would be in pain :E i understand doing that in an emergency situation where you can't get to a vet but oof sounds not good otherwise

In Hungary it is illegal to put down a healthy animal, but it happens sometimes when the dog is old (but has no other particular problem). No one's gonna question the vet's decision, and since the dog is old they can just say it had some serious problem.
But yeah, a responsible vet wouldn't do this (and shouldn't).
