Am I crazy?

Background info: My friend loaned almost 400€ from me last year. Not all at once, but the final debt was eventually the sum above.

She's been really slow with payments and today I finally told her to just forget about the debt. She still owed me 255€.

I honestly feel better not having to worry about the debt anymore, and I don't critically need the money back so it's cool. It felt like the right thing to do. But like, am I crazy to let go of a debt that big? Even if she is a dear longtime friend.

Thoughts?

She was really grateful and it was a huge weight off her shoulders.

As long as you can afford it, it was practically a "good deed" for your friend which I hope they show big gratefulness for. Like helping out a friend who needed it or something. However, I would not want to make it a habit or do it again without clear rules for when they are paying you back because that's *a lot* of money.

hopefully, she'll pay you back in another way or something later in life when she might be more financially independent and stable. i hope it went to something important.

it was crazy in the eyes of capitalism, for sure.
but everyone understands helping out friends who need it more than you when you can.

No, I don't think it was. If you can afford it, it's not crazy - she clearly needs it.

i think my one rule abt lending money is i dont. i just give it, because lending money can put a serious strain on any relationship and i dont want my view of ppl being soured by something as trivial as money.

it seems like she was struggling to pay stuff back like bills, food etc. including you so maybe it was a big weight off her shoulders and she was truly grateful but yeah i would be cautious loaning more money.

It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks
if you feel like it was the right thing to do.
Because you gave from you heart
I think you’ll be blessed
with something in return❤️
