ok be honest am i the weird one here

recently ive noticed a trend of ppl calling animals, whether pets or wild, that they dont know the sex of for "they", like using they them pronouns the way u would for a person

and that is absolutely wild to me?? is it a language thing?? does that not strike others as odd??

like pets i know the sex of ill use he and she mostly for the owners sake and ease of speaking but every other animal is an it. always done that, always will, never heard anyone else do differently until this past year but now i see tons of ppl doing it

and its bizarre to me

I use whatever grammatical gender(what is it in English again?) the animal  has in German (eg das Schwein or der Vogel) and it for English except if it's pets then whatever the owner tells me.

I never use it for animals, feels gross. I don't use they though, maybe because that's what we do in Hebrew, we don't have it or they so yeah. Cats are she though, if I don't know, a cat is a she. Very Jerusalem habit.

i feel like it sounds less harsh in norwegian maybe like we use den which translates to it AND that

u say that cat
so cat becomes it

I don't think we got a proper translation, that dosen't sound weird. If anything i call it "the dog" and they can correct me.

i don't think you are weird to react strongly to it. i was the same way when i was taught as a kid that using he/she in an essay was the proper way to refer to someone you didn't know the gender of. to me it just looked so informal and would drive me nuts seeing the / line after line. but it didn't seem to bother anyone else.

i feel like i've just said "e" in the past, so either way i was right
