Am I right??

My boyfriend and me are fighting because I said I grew up bilingual

which I did, because from when I was 11 I lived in the US for several years and was young enough to pick up the language as a native speaker without actively having to learn it

I mean even nowadays my sisters and me talk in english, I watch movies in english, I browse the web in english etc
English is exactly like German in my brain, as in I don't have to translate things
It's just instantly there without thinking about it

but his opinion is that you have to have a parent that speaks that 2nd language for it to count as growing up bilingual and that those years aren't enough to count as growing up bilingual

What are your thoughts?

Mmm, i wouldn't say you need a parent to grow up bilingual, no.

You don't need a parent to speak another language to be bilingual.
If you can speak two langueages fluently, you are bilingual. It has nothing to do with parents or where you live tbh.

i would say that i grew up bilingual, like i speak chinese at home and swedish in public doesn't growing up bilingual just mean that you were in contact and picked up the languages as you grew up

If you for example have parents that speak the same language, and then grow up in a country where another language is spoken, obviously you would be considered bilingual. But the term itself just means that you speak two languages fluently, so you can easily be bilingual without having grown up with two languages as long as you have picked it up well later.

Yeah but tbh, they do have a big population of hispanic ppl so probably a lot of those are bilingual. Its probbaly worse if u look at the rest of the american population tho

I think the more understandable argument is whether 11 is too old to say you grew up bilingual but I don't think it is. As for the second point, that is so stupid, I lived in Canada from ages 3 to 6 and picked up English as a native language, meanwhile my parents are mediocre at BEST.

pretty sure 11 still counts as growing up,,,,,,,
