Writing a book

This is a bit vent-ish

Anyone here a writer or aspiring to be one? Because I sure am!

What I also am is a perfectionist, so I have a tendency to be editing my writing while still on first draft. I'm also a pretty slow writer. 400-500 words during an hour! This is probably because I'm a bit of a pantser, I have a vague idea of what I am writing. But not enough to be able to write effectively. Some days I also find what I have written extremely unoriginal and therefore horrid.

I had this idea of what it would be like to write a book, and it was not this!! Romanticising things will only let you down. Although I must say I don't hate writing still. it can be very cathargic.

ohhhhh, been there, done that

I do plan on doing NaNoWriMo this year to get this idea that has been kicking around in my head for the past 8 years finally to paper, but no clue how to go from there
like I have it pretty much planned out in broad strokes and even a few very specific ideas already without fully knowing how to get there in detail
but I have started writing a few scenes and I've already edited the life out of them, because I just feel like I need to get the beginning done properly before I can get the rest started

have you written before or is this a go big or go home project?

YES YES YES hsbddjd
Let me tell you, after I started doing outlines, my life CHANGED. I also would just like, write with only a slight idea of where it was going, and I always thought outlines sounded so boring. But like, you put your own spin on it you know? Tbh I just make a list of each event, no matter how little. It doesn't have to be very detailed but I've found just planning SOMETHING ahead really helped.

I also recommend the app Pluot, it's a very organised way to map out stories and it's great when you have random ideas and need a structured place to store them

This is my first ever longer project, I have tried to start writing before but didn't go far!

I've found that as long as I have a goal in mind for the characters, the scenes kind of come naturally one after another. Some entirely unplanned but it works!

I think my goal is to find a balance between editing and writing progress.

does it help to set you goals for "I have to write at least this many words before I'm allowed to go back and edit"? this sometimes works for me on smaller projects

A small advice from a not so seasoned writer such as myself is to find out what the problems they meet are, and what solutions there might be.

Think about what personalities the characters have, and how they would react.

As long as you get started writing, you will discover the story as you go! I have written scenes that I later deleted entirely, but it helped me get to know my characters

The biggest and most often asked question a writer is going to meet is "Why?"

I kind of let the text 'sit' for at least 1-2 weeks before I look at it! I've found that I see it with fresh eyes at that point ^ - ^

I have tried to, but haven't found a strategy that personally works. Though I write about the characters in longer texts, but then desert it. I don't look at it ever again haha!

I might check the app out! It might be exactly what I'll need

mm thats the problem the thing im stuck on for the specific story is the conflict, no matter how i twist and turn it, it comes back to, but why not just resolve whatever conflict i come up with in a sensible and normal way such as discussing the matter over a coffee lol

downside of slice of life i suppose

Slice of life is tough! Feel you

But I find that when we are in the actual situations, we do stupid things as well which screws things up

Couples that can't communicate are abundant in our society IRL, someone reading their story would yell "JUST TALK"

I find this very interesting, so write things as ridiculous as you want because there is bound to be someone out there that could relate

There are consumers that find others mistakes and dramas extremely interesting to read about, maybe to feel good about themselves or just to spice up their everyday life!

Books, comics and novels alike, are to entertain the consumer!

I hope you find the motivation and courage to write the story however you would like.

my other story thats collaborative writing (rp lol) is very much like that, just like throwing out stuff  and conflicts for the fun of it and it really makes to story go wrooom and im sure some do like that sorta stuff (i mean i do, thats why i write it sometimes), i think im just so picky with this story bc ive  had these characters for 10 years , but really i should just sit down and write whatever bc i can always scrap it haha
