Yeah, I employ the same kind of logic, since I would think guilt is one of the most debilitating things to feel. However, with the added statement that I do support it, in the instances where it's clear that the individual will never feel remorse; then there's no point in keeping them alive. On the other hand, suffering because you are being stripped of your freedom by spending your whole life in prison is actually not something I've considered (probably because Swedish prisons are basically hotels compared to prisons in many other countries...), so you might be right that we're better off without the death penalty.
yeah same in finland and i think many penalties here are way way way too low

What is interesting here is that everyone is assuming that the only crime that the death penalty could be used for is murder. The eye for an eye-argument loses some of its relevance if we start considering other types of crimes where death penalty could be employed.

Yes, absolutely. And way too few people are actually charged. For example, only 5 out of 100 rape cases in Sweden make it to trial, which is seriously fucked up.

I think aside from it being inhumane and barbaric, it's also an easy way out for criminals. It's tough though, the families of victims of terror and extreme violence often want their loved one's attacker killed and I can't blame them for it.

most major criminals, yet not all (at least proven), are mentally ill people who have been left untreated for far too long. in that aspect i can symphatize with them, for i know through personal experiences how bad mental health facilities can be. some of those people have no idea that what they've done is bad. most regret the act afterwards. doesn't justify harming others.

there are only a few recorded cases where with proper mental health treatment a criminal has been "stabilized" so to speak, though those cases have usually turned around with people intervening with the former inmates (ie. by making them stop taking their medication) and thus so far there's only so much proof that indicates it's effective.

on psychological level, it's speculated that once a person kills another, they cannot hold in the urge to kill once more. they may have a year or two of relative peacefulness, but often return to their heinous ways through either by that simple built-in urge or provocation. sexual crimes share similarities (and are very typically paired with murders) and should be treated, if not completely, then near equally.

this, in my opinion, justifies a life sentence at minimum. they should not be let out because they cannot control themselves. if they were under some substance(s) at the time then it's a different story.

this creates a dilemma though; is it any good to let them take up spaces in jail that could be used to hold in other, less of a threat criminals?

when the mental health treatments seem to have no effect on the inmate in a course of decade or so, i think they might be a lost cause. especially if they don't show any regret towards the crimes they committed. especially if they're proud of what they did. those people, i believe, deserve to die. torturing them is inhumane.
