Can't we just make a poll of the designs and be like "the best design will be in shops or something" then wont people just vote for what they think actually looks nice?

What makes no sense is why is you're questioning this.  The judging is done on a point system and some designers favour some designs over others due to the way they are designed, or the uniqueness of the design. Zodiac had rather unique looking skins which I believe were in her odds till the final. 

You shouldn't put down other contenders just because your favourite didn't get a badge. There will always be at least 2 designer contests a year for people retry.
