As finals are coming and for many people the school year is ending, studying is taking up a lot of time. It's stressful, it's hard and most of the time, it's boring. Today, I'm going to give you some tips!
Tip #1:
Take notes. When you're listening to a lecture, watching a video in school or even just doing worksheets, take notes! Put vocabulary words, important facts, and information in your own words in short note forms. Draw symbols to relate things in your mind so they jog your memory during an exam! Notes also are good for studying, making it easy to study things through your own words.
Tip #2:
Take frequent breaks. A good idea is to plan a schedule for your studying. Most people tend to concentrate for about 45 minutes. So study for 45 minutes and then take a 15 minute break. And if you can't concentrate for the full 45 minutes, do 30 and then take a 15 minutes break! Just don't take to many breaks or have the break time outweigh your study time. Also, remember a break ends- don't get distracted and forget to get back to studying!
Tip #3:
Have a friend help you. You can quiz each other, use flashcards and come up with fun studying games such as Jeopardy to studying. Studying can be boring alone, especially if you're just reading out of a text book. Come up with fun games that work between your friends. Help each other out to connect ideas and understand what you need to know. But remember, choose your study friends, or study group, wisely. Choose people who are serious about the test and won't goof off too much.
Tip #4:
Don't cram the night before a test. Even though it's very easy to procrastinate the pain that is studying, try not to! Cramming before a test really isn't helpful. Use to my own personal experience, it can be the opposite of helpful. Review throughout the week coming up to the test and let it sink into your brain. Give yourself time to understand and draw the conclusions you need. Don't shove all the information at yourself at once. It doesn't go down well.
Tip #5:
Set priorities. Some teachers point out what will be important on the test and if they don't, ask your teacher! Use this to your advantage! Using this information you can understand what you should study the most and what you need to concentrate on.
Tip #6:
Ask for help. Asking your teacher for help can be awkward sometimes. That's okay. If you need help on something, ask them! You need to understand the material and asking for help and to have the material explained in a different way can be very helpful. If teachers set up time after classes where they will teach kids who want the extra help and revision, take the opportunity and go!
Tip #7:
Use the internet to your advantage. Though not everything you hear on the internet is true, there are some pretty helpful sites! Find old tests and practice quizzes on the internet. You can also find studying games that can be more fun that studying out of the text book. Use online studying tools to your advantage! Also, you can find more studying tips that fits how you learn online as well.
