The Beirut Explosion (by Moss )

It’s been a week since the tragic explosion in Beirut, Libanon. BBC reports around 135 confirmed deaths and about 5000 injured so far, but the numbers might increase since there are still people missing since the explosion.

According to Beirut’s governor, Marwan Abboud, up to 300 000 people have become temporarily homeless due to the massive explosion that could even be heard in Cyprus which is around 200 kilometres across the Mediterranean Sea.

An investigation about what caused the explosion, as well as who is responsible for it, is currently ongoing, but BBC reports that it most likely was caused by the almost 3000 ton ammonium nitrate that was stored in the warehouse where the explosion happened.

The substance can be used for bombs or other explosive things. If the substance is stored correctly then it’s not very dangerous but when a lot of it is stored in the same place that’s when it can be dangerous. With time it starts to absorb moisture which turns the, normally, powder substance into a rock and if it comes in contact with fire the reaction will be more intense. On Tuesday the 4th of August a welding work was being done in the warehouse  which might have caused a fire which later caused the explosion.

The harbour where the explosion was located is also the place where the nation’s biggest grain silo was located, which now can worsen the already bad food security situation in Lebanon. The News York Times reported that 17 containers with masks, gloves, gowns and other personal protective equipment got destroyed in the explosion as well. Even though the virus is pretty limited in Lebanon according to The New York times, the worst affected areas with high transmission were affected by the explosion. The WHO is working on sending new personal protection equipment to Lebanon.

The Lebanon economy was suffering before the explosion, a high unemployment rate as well as an ongoing inflation. The disaster is most likely going to make the economy even worse and they might face an economic crisis.

The Lebanese Red Cross is the organization in charge of providing ambulance service in Lebanon, but the organization does not have enough funds. On their website they report that they only have the funds to respond to 20% of the emergency calls they receive. It’s free to get medical treatment from the Red Cross however, due to the lack of funding they are either too late or not capable to respond to 1 out of 5 of the emergencies. The organization also consists of volunteers who during weekdays have other jobs which they need to attend to be able to get money for their own families.

Around 300 000 people have lost their homes, families have been separated and parents and kids have died. During a disaster, help organizations have around 24 hours to save kids and youths to end up in the hands of trafficking. The evil people in the world know when people are the most vulnerable and they are not afraid to use that vulnerability.

If you have the possibility please consider donating to at least one of these organizations to help them and those affected in this disaster. You do not need to donate a lot but every penny counts.

Thank you for this informative and nice article to raise more awareness about the situation,
My country Israel and Lebanon might not have the best relationship but as human beings,
I'd love to put that aside and give a donation as well.
As human beings sometimes we have to put our differences aside and help each other,
and even if I don't agree with my country's actions or anything, I as a human being,
I want to take part in this.
You're absolutely right, bless you. (l)

Just a few tips to that would make this read a bit better:

1) the numbers might increase since there are still people missing since the explosion.

The highlighted section should be as as it sounds better when reading it.

2) Beirut’s governor, Marwan Abboud

The highlighted letter should be a capital G as your referring to someone with that title. Also you shouldn't use the comma in between the title and the name.

3) An investigation about what caused the explosion,

The highlighted section should be into as it reads better.

4) it, is currently ongoing

There is no need for this comma

5) , but BBC reports

the comma here should be a full stop. Also, you don't need the word but once if the comma changed to a full stop instead it should be The.

6) not very dangerous but when a lot of it is stored

but should be changed to however

7) can be dangerous

be should change to become

cool turns the, normally, powder substance into a rock

No need for all the commas. Also normally should be normal

9) Tuesday the 4th of August

It should read Tuesday, August 4th

10) a welding work

don't need the a.

11) not capable to respond to 1 out of 5 of the emergencies

out of should be in

12) be able to get money for their own families.

get should be earn

13) 24 hours to save kids and youths to end up in the hands of trafficking.

This makes no sense it should read 24 hours to kids and youths before they end up in the hands of traffickers

I'm sorry if this sounds like me being rude but the journalist in me is just trying to help xx
