Since the first ever VP TikTok competition just ended and the winners were recently announced I thought it would be a good idea to explain what TikTok is (for all of us who are not very familiar with the app) and present some famous TikTok people and discuss what they do on the platform.
TikTok is a video sharing app where people can share videos with a duration of 3 seconds up to 1 minute (some users can share up to 3 minutes long videos). TikTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance and was first launched in 2017 in China, and later on, launched worldwide in late 2018 when it was merged with Musical.ly. TikTok quickly gained popularity in Asia, United States, Europe and other parts of the world and in October 2020 the app had over 2 billion downloads worldwide. In China there’s a different kind of TikTok, called Douyin, it’s owned by the same company as TikTok and mostly looks the same but have featured such as in-video search feature that can search for other content by a person by searching for the creator's face in the app, it also has a buying future as well as a booking hotel feature.
Multiple countries have threatened to ban TikTok, such as the USA that planned to ban the app on the 20th September 2020 but the plan was cancelled. The government of India banned the app in June 2020 as a response to a border clash with China and Pakistan banned the app in October 2020.
Charli D’Amelio is a 16 years old TikTok dancer and social media personality. She is the person on TikTok with most followers worldwide with over 100 million followers, she gained over 50 million followers in just 7 months. She has a Guinness world record for having the most followers on TikTok. She is most known for her dancing videos on TikTok, her first video was published in May 2019.
Ayeh, or maybe most known as cooking with Ayeh, is an adult self-taught chef who creates cooking videos which she posts on TikTok. She is mostly making vegetarian or vegan dishes but sometimes she creates dishes with fish or chicken so there’s something for everyone to try to cook. She has around 330k followers on TikTok.
Faouzia is a 20 years old female singer and songwriter, who creates short singing videos which she posts on TikTok. Faouzia also creates her own music and has sung duets with famous singers such as John Legend and Kelly Clarkson. She has 2.2 million followers on TikTok.
Vanessa, or cutcreaser which she is mostly known as on social media, is a female makeup artist. She is 21 years old and born in El Salvador but raised and lives in New York. On TikTok, she posts makeup tutorials and has almost 120k followers.
