How you can help the people of Ukraine (by Atencia )

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been going on for 2 weeks now and the people of Ukraine is in desperate need of help. Organisations such as the international committee of the red cross and the united nations refugee agency are working tirelessly with getting supplies to the people of Ukraine. The UNHCR estimates that more than 2 million people have fled Ukraine to neighbouring countries so far and UNHCR has declared this a “Level 3 emergency” which is the highest level. Houses, gas and electricity infrastructures have been destroyed and many people are left without water, food, heat, electricity and medications. Many have been injured and several have lost their lives and many remain missing.

Disclaimer: These are my words and not the entire team’s words.

Here are a few major organisations that you can donate to if you want to help the people of Ukraine in this incredibly difficult time.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, has been working in Ukraine since 2014. They have over 600 staff members in Ukraine and have worked closely with the Ukrainian Red Cross Society. Together they have helped people with emergency assistance such as food, water and other essential items. They have also supported hospitals and primary healthcare facilities with medical equipment and emergency preparedness. They now are working intensively with repairing water stations and helping families that have been separated by the conflict to be able to reconnect. If you want to donate you can do so via the link below, or by checking your national Red Cross society’s website.

The United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees), is in Ukraine and in the neighbouring countries to help those who have been forced to flee the country or that is stuck in the country. The people of Ukraine are in need of humanitarian aid and the UNHCR is providing the people with blankets, sleeping mats and emergency shelters. They can also provide the people with cash assistance so that displaced people can purchase food, water and medicine. They also have a specialist protection service that is trying to identify people in need of particular assistance such as children travelling alone and people with disabilities to offer them the special assistance and help they might need. If you want to donate to UNHCR you can do that with the link below or by looking up your local UNHCR website online.

The Save the Children organisation has been operating in Ukraine since 2014 and have helped families and children in Ukraine with life-saving assistance such as food, water, and safe places for children. They estimate that around one million children have fled Ukraine to neighbouring countries since February 24th. Airstrikes and explosions have damaged essential services such as schools and hospitals and many families and children have been displaced from their homes. If you want to donate to Save the Children then you can do that via the link below or by finding your national Save the Children organisation´s website.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders), MSF, is helping Ukraine and the Ukrainian people with medical assistance and medical supplies. They are currently working with providing hospitals staff in Ukraine with knowledge, surgical and trauma kits and medication. They are also at the borders to the neighbouring countries to support those who are fleeing the country with medical assistance since many are suffering from dehydration or hypothermia. MSF will continue to send different kinds of medical kits, medications for chronic diseases and supplies to respond to mass casualty events to Ukraine. If you want to donate to MSF you can do so via the link below or by finding your local MSF website.

If you have the possibility to donate to any of the organisations above (or any other organisation that is supporting Ukraine and the people of Ukraine) please consider doing so. The people are in desperate need of help and you can contribute to helping them with your donation.
