The long walk home (short story) |
The Long Walk Home The bus was warm on a rainy Thursday night. Avery had worked overtime, so she was on her way home later than she originally planned. The rain poured down making small puddles on the streets. As the bus reached her stop it came to a sudden halt causing her to bolt forwards and fall down, "Thanks a lot!" Avery said before stepping off of the bus. Avery looked all around her at the busy street which was full of late night shoppers. Rather than fighting through the crowds Avery crossed the street and walked towards the park. This would not have been her usual route as there had been warnings on the local news for people to avoid the area at night, but it was cold and wet and she couldn’t wait to get home so she could spend some time with her boyfriend, Shadow. Pulling up her hood she quickened her pace and began her journey home. The only sound that could be heard was the click clack of Avery’s heels. The further into the park she got she began to hear little whispers from all around her. It sounded as though hundreds of tiny voices were saying the same phrase all at once, "He’s coming Avery! He’s coming!" Avery shook her head and stepped up her pace again determined to get through the park as soon as possible. She felt her body begin to shake starting with her hands and spreading all over. The whispers had been getting louder and were now screams. Panic stricken Avery turned around to face her fear only to see that there was no one there. She laughed nervously to herself and turned round to carry on her journey. She had only taken a handful of steps when a hand clamped tightly around her mouth. Avery tried to scream but the person holding her tightened their grip. Using every bit of strength she had Avery struggled and fought to get free from her attacker, she managed to twist herself around and see the person holding her. Her heart froze when she realised who she was fighting against, "Shadow?" she stuttered. Looking into his eyes she hardly recognised the boyfriend she had been rushing home to just minutes before. Standing in front of her now he looked completely different. The glint in his eyes frightened her he looked what she could only describe as hungry. Shadow moved her hair back and exposed her pale neck. She tried to back away from him but he was too strong for her. As he held her tightly he brought his lips back over his teeth to reveal his sharp fangs. He sank his fangs into her soft neck and drank her life from her. When his hunger was satisfied he was released from the compulsion that had taken over him, he looked down at the lifeless body in his arms, "Avery!" Shadow whispered as tears began to run down his face. |
