Eurovision 2010s Personal Ranking |
In an attempt to further bother anyone who might find themselves reading my blog posts, I will present for you a ranking of my personal winners of Eurovision song contest in this decade. In other words, in this blog post I will rank the songs I deem as the best each year according to each other. This is obviously subjective. 10. Russia 2012: Buranovskiye Babushki - Party For Everybody I don't think I would have picked this as the winner if it weren't for the nostalgia. I despised Europhia (the winning song) with passion back in 2012, and I meant from the bottom of my heart that Russia was way superior to Sweden that year. The song is cute, I guess, it's a cozy song and it's all about feel-good and all that. It's far more amusing than many generic songs, it stands out and therefore it is special. Quality-wise on the song, though, there's a lot of entries in 2012 that are better. This is just something. 9. Bulgaria 2018: Equinox - Bones Honestly, I'm surprised I've placed the song this far down on the list. A factor might be that 2018 leaves a disgusting taste in my mouth because of Israel's victory which I am 100% incapable of coming to terms with. That year, as well as the following... they're just simply forever ruined to me. However, this is a very decent, very high-quality song. I was amazed when Bulgaria was able to deliver in successive years - and it is tremendously underrated. 8. Turkey 2010: maNga - We Could Be The Same I struggled a lot with this song for a long time only because of their band name. I was like "that's lame". Ignoring that, and ignoring the kind of weird emo-vibe with the entire thing, it's a very decent song. It came incredibly close to winning, and is far superior to Germany's winning entry regardless of whatever anyone else might think. 2010 is a very absurd year as pretty much all my favourites of the year finished either very low on the overall list, or did not even manage to qualify for the final. It's a good song, maybe not my personal favourite, which might make it weird to list it as the winner - but we all do weird things and if I came with e.g. Estonia that would be very weird. (Although I love that song) 7. Greece 2011: Λούκας Γιώρκας ft. Stereo Mike - Watch My Dance This too, 2011 was a weird year. It is stacked with guilty pleasures, there's a lot of songs with decent quality and a lot of surprises. Among them, this one finishing at the place it did, 7th in the Final. Why is that weird, you might ask. It won its respective semi-final, normally that would result in the song finishing 5th or higher, but this "flopped" in the final. Arguably because of the rap which does not really fit the song, but I love the Greek part of the song and that's enough for me. Oh - and it is faaaar superior to the mess of a "song" Azerbaijan had the nerve to send, and unfortunately win with. 100% shade. 6. Switzerland 2019: Luca Hänni - She Got Me In a few years, I guess this song will drop on the list. It's fairly new, which might cause it to be ranked higher than the older ones. Some of the comments for my winner of 2018 applies here. Unlike the other songs, I listened to this following the contest without any expectations or any idea what to expect. I like the song, it's different from the other songs I like. 5. Austria 2014: Conchita Wurst - Rise Like A Phoenix The only actual winner of the contest that simultaneously is ranked as the winner according me. I have never had doubts about what song is the rightful winner of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, and I doubt that would ever change - unlike many of the other competitions. 4. Georgia 2016: Nika Kocharov and Young Georgian Lolitaz - Midnight Gold I don't know if this would be considered the most surprising song on this list according other people. This song amazes me, I love it deeply. It appeals to me on so many different levels, this is something I would enjoy outside my Eurovision "taste". It is almost repulsively underrated, it's rarely I would give kudos to UK for anything, but I am pleased the British jury gave this 12 points - because that what it is. It's extremely good. 3. Italy 2017: Francesco Gabbani - Occidentali's Karma Time to introduce my Italian bias. Italy always do it well on my personal rankings and I have absolutely no clue why. This song should have won in Kyiv and I'm disappointed it did not. Italy is always robbed by the jury (or maybe the popular vote in 2011). It's bordering to ridiculous. This is high quality, the lyrics is extremely clever, the performance is really good and it's just so nice. 2. Greece 2013: Koza Mostra ft. Agathon Iakovidis - Alcohol Is Free According this list I might look biased towards two countries, but if you look into my lists in detail (which you won't) they are usually somewhat diverse. That being said, the good entries of Greece, and Italy, has been genuinely good. This song!! Much better than Denmark!!! 1. Italy 2015: Il Volo - Grande Amore The least surprising one on the list. The most expected. Of course I would put this at the top of the list. It is at the top of the all time list. It is, hands down, the best entry in the history of the entire contest and if you are incapable of seeing how genuinely good this masterpiece is. Big oof. This is among the most solid performances ever, they are excellent at what they do. The lyrics.. the composition!! Everything. I cannot comprehend how the jury heard this and went like "oh yeah this.. 5th place". This song alone is an excellent example of why we should reconsider how the juries are - on the popular vote this was ranked 1st. Resulting in this, again, masterpiece placing 3rd in the final. Unacceptable. I get angered and sad when I think about it. It i the biggest robbery of the entire competition and people should be ashamed. I love this, with great passion. |
