MY REACTION TO THE ITALIAN GRAND PRIX 2020
I expect this blog to be ignored, I expect this content to be so niche that no one but me would enjoy it. That being said, I don't really care, so here we go. Anyway, I present to you all; my wall of text about F1.

Monza, Italy. September 6th 2020. Around 6 PM CEST. Motorsport history. Perhaps the most unexpected podium in Formula 1 ever. Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz jr., and Lance Stroll. What is perhaps even more unexpected here is the one guy in Finland who placed a 20 cent bet that those would be the three drivers on the podium. To stress how incredibly unexpected this podium was, those 20 cents became 33,398 euros.

I would be lying if I said that the majority of the races this season had not been disappointing. The season started of with a very exciting race, but following the Austrian Grand Prix, we were once again cursed with Mercedes and Red Bull basically constantly on the podium, as if it was exclusively for them. We are however blessed that they have finally realised that it is more exciting for the viewers to watch what is going on in the midfield, where the actual competition is happening. The battle for the 4th place, or 5th place, is more heated than whatever is happening in the front. The Austrian Grand Prix, the first race, was exciting. An unexpected podium, lots of retirements due to mechanical failures as if it was the 50's.

And then, several races with podiums to expect. The only thing keeping the fans alive was the midfield battling and laughing, making memes, mocking Ferrari for "copying the 2019 Williams" - for those who are still reading, who are not following F1; the 2019 Williams took a total of one (1) point during the entire race, meaning that they only finished in top 10 once during the entire season. Williams were incredibly bad, and they still are, meaning, Ferrari is shit. Ferrari is the only team who is statistically worse than last year, they are in average slower. Basically evolving backwards.

Monza 2020, however. What a race. People ditched watching it because they assumed it was going to be yet another HAM BOT VER-podium (Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes), Max Verstappen (Red Bull)). Boy, what a mistake. It's easily the most exciting race in this era. It is the first time in 8 years a different team than Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull has won. God knows (too lazy to google) how long it is since NONE of the three top teams finished on the podium. It is at least 8 years since neither of those three teams finished on the podium. It is one of the closest races we have had in years, with actual competition in the top, with less than a second separating the winner from the runner-up.

I am gutted Sainz didn't win. Of course. It is no secret I'm a fan of McLaren. My boys, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz jr.. I love them. Sainz would possibly have finished 2nd even if the race hadn't been wild. His qualifying pace was just prima, fantastic. And his start (the first one). Holy cow, beautiful. And he was so close. So incredibly close. However, being sad over a podium? Being sad about him finishing 2nd? That's illegal. It was fantastic, and both of them were incredible. I could not believe my eyes seeing both in the top 5 pretty much constantly through the race.

Seeing a French winner for the first time in my life-time. Incredible. I have never heard the French national anthem being played after a race. It has been 24 years since the last time a French driver won. It is the first time this season an Italian team finish on the top of the podium. It's the first time this season the drivers on the podium is on the podium, and it is the second podium for all three throughout their careers. I do loathe Stroll, I will not lie - but it was a good drive. It was acceptable.

How Alpha Tauri (winning team) celebrated, I was in tears honestly. Beautiful, it's probably the happiest podium in years. None of the teams on the podium has any reason to be disappointed, it is unexpected that 3 midfield teams finish on the podium. Three different teams being represented on the podium. Three different countries being represented on the podium. The other drivers walking up to Pierre Gasly to congratulate him. Man, how Romain Grosjean was happy hearing that a fellow Frenchman had won. You could hear he was genuinely thrilled to hear who had won. They aren't even driving for the same team. The sportsmanship which was exhibited after the race. Truly beautiful. Almost in tears writing this.

It was like watching Formula 2, genuine competition. Diverse podium. Happy podium. Emotional podium. Unexpected result. Please give us reverse grid because it will obviously result in more exciting races. I'm just hoping the next race will be more exciting than Barcelona, if not.. might as well just show us the Italian 2020 one again. I wouldn't mind.

I'll stop now. But I would recommend watching the highlights, even if you don't like the sport. Because it's historic, nothing short of amazing. It cured the post-game sadness I suffered from seeing my beloved hockey team lose in game 7, effectively ending their 2019-20 season.

Nice blog, really enjoyed reading it as a F1 fan aswell really sad that Max had a DNF both races would have rather seen the DNF for Mercedes haha. Can't stand Lewis his face on pretty much every Nr 1 podium and him mixing politics with F1 is just ugh... Not denying he isn't talented, but races are getting so predictable lately with Merc winning every time, but the races in Italy were really interesting. Glad Albon got P3, he really needed that after many bad results. Excited for the next race in Russia ^^
Yeah I agree  I am happy to hear that you enjoyed reading the blog!!
I'm very at "if Mercedes absolutely have to win every race I'd rather see Bottas win". I think dominance ruins the sport and the race now at Mugello, I saw that with my mother who hasn't watched F1 since the 80s and she was very excited or whatever and I was like yeah nah the 1-2 is boring, it's the other things that are exciting. Especially for me as a McLaren fan, they're finally doing good!! I was gutted to see Sainz with a DNF.. Horrifying, especially as his future doesn't look good at all in Ferrari : (
I'm also glad Albon finally got the P3, but I was hoping Ricciardo would get it instead so it's just like with the Gasly victory at Monza, under pretty much any other circumstance I would be absolutely thrilled and I am happy for him and was emotionally moved by it... but I would muuuuch rather see Sainz at the top : / Bittersweet really.
