Happy Chuseok |
Chuseok 추석 (also originally known as Hangawi 한가위) is a harvest festival in Korea, celebrated throughout the duration of 3 days. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Lunar calendar, on a full moon. This year the celebratory dates are 14-16 September. As a sign and celebration of good harvest, Koreans typically go back to their ancestral hometown to pay respect to their ancestors spirits, eat typical food such as Songpyeon 송편 and drink rice wine. This celebration is commonly referred to as "the Korean thanksgiving" in English. Charye is a tradition which is typically done in the morning of the first day of Chuseok. What does it consist of? Arranging a table with food and drinks, put in front of a small shrine to honour their ancestors to even 4 generations back. Why is it doen? Because Koreans typically don't believe that a person is gone once they are dead, but that their spirits live on. Each side of the table is reserved for certain foods or drinks. In the north rice and soup are placed while at the south end of the table we can usually find vegetables and fruit. On the west and in the middle there are meat dishes and on the South there are rice cakes and drinks like soju and makgeolli. I have mentioned songpyeon above. Now, songpyeon is a typical dish which is made only for Chuseok. It is a sort of rice cake which also contains sesame seed, black bean, cinnamon, pine nuts, walnuts, honey, mung beans, chestnut and jujube. Songpyeon isn't only significant due to the ingredients it contains, but the name itself as well. The rice crust of songpyeon is in the shape of a full moon, but one it is wrapped and stuffed, it has the shape of a half moon. A Korean legend states that these two shapes ruled the destiny of two rivaling kingdoms. (how cool is it that you're basically eating the destiny of kingdoms? It doesn't get more badass than this)Hangwa is another typical dish. It's and artistic decorated with colors and textured patterns and they usually resemble leaf shapes. Of course, Chuseok is a festival of fun so folk dances and folk games will always be present and played by everyone from young to elder. Chuseok has long been celebrated, even before the split between North and South Korea. So even now, Chuseok is also celebrated in North Korea. Of course it has significant differences due to the ideology present in the North When does Chuseok fall nest year? On the 4th of October. But for now, HAPPY CHUSEOK EVERYONE! |
